TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Pigeon Wings Strike’

TouchArcade Rating:

The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best" thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.

These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.

Without further ado…

Pigeon Wings Strike

The original Pigeon Wings is a long-time favorite of ours, fetching 5 stars in our review, a Game of the Week nod, a place on our Best of 2017 list, and a spot on my own personal picks for the best games of 2017. So… I guess you could say we liked it? It featured extremely fast cave flyer-style racing through 50 well-designed levels in a story-driven campaign, but a few months after its release developers Ignacio Schiefelbein and Kris Hattori updated Pigeon Wings to include a new endless mode. The endless mode was fine, but it was pretty basic and not everything the developers had envisioned it to be, and so they set out to rectify that with what would become an entirely new game called Pigeon Wings Strike (Free), which landed in the App Store this week.

There isn’t a ton to say about Pigeon Wings Strike that isn’t apparent right from the start. It’s the Pigeon Wings brand of frantic racing but endless with a much more robust scoring system and a way beefier progression system which sees you unlocking a whole team of new playable pilots, each with unique abilities. Making a return are the absolutely superb tilt-based controls, but don’t worry tilt haters, there’s an option for touch controls too. Best of all is that Pigeon Wings Strike is free with ads and a simple one-time IAP to remove them, so it serves as a great way to experience this series without risking any cash. If you like it, I can wholeheartedly recommend picking up the original for a couple of bucks too, but for now I’m really just enjoying diving back into the Pigeon Wings world with the blisteringly fast and fun Pigeon Wings Strike.
