Although they’ve been developing games for the better part of two decades, 5th Cell is most widely-known as the creators of the Drawn to Life and Scribblenauts franchises. Entries in both of those series have made their way to mobile over the years, and in 2012 5th Cell made quite a splash with their mobile-exclusive auto-runner Run Roo Run ($0.99) which was a lot of fun. After going quiet for some time, 5th Cell has now announced a new mobile project, and it’s a pretty surprising one. It’s called Anchors in the Drift and it’s an online RPG type of game with five playable classes and all the types of things you’d expect from a free to play social RPG on mobile. I’ll get to why this is such a surprising announcement in a minute, but first check out the new trailer for Anchors in the Drift.
So as some of you who follow 5th Cell might recall, Anchors in the Drift was actually announced back in the fall of 2015 and was a very different looking game. The developers tried to crowdfund the game’s development through Fig and came up about $400,000 short of their $500,000 goal. The following spring 5th Cell was hit with layoffs and they’ve been basically silent on new projects since. I think everyone assumed Anchors in the Drift was a dead project, so it was quite a shock to see it announced as their new mobile game, albeit in a pretty different state as it was originally. No word on a release date for this new Anchors in the Drift just yet, but you can pre-register with your email on the game’s official website to stay in the know and we’ll of course be following along with this one closely. Very pleased to see 5th Cell back at it.
