Terry Cavanagh’s ‘Dicey Dungeons’ Gets a New Trailer for PAX South and is Looking Great

In May of last year Super Hexagon ($2.99) developer Terry Cavanagh announced that the game he had created for the 7 Day Roguelike Challenge, Dicey Dungeons, was going into full production and would be his next commercial release. Cavanagh has put together a small team to help in developing Dicey Dungeons and in the 8-ish months since that initial announcement the game has come a really long way. If you’re unfamiliar with the game it’s a roguelike deck-building RPG but with a dicey twists. The various cards in the game are augmented based on how your dice rolls turn out; so for example an attack card can do [X] damage where [X] is the number you roll. It’s a very pen-and-paper RPG approach but buttoned up in an easy to digest structure and an extremely charming art style. You can see just what I mean in this positively lovely new Dicey Dungeons trailer which the team has put together for PAX South this weekend.

Of course my brief explanation above is grossly oversimplifying Dicey Dungeons, and if you wanted a much more thorough breakdown of the more intricate details of the game, Terry Cavanagh’s blog is a good place to start as it features a lot of information on how the game has evolved since its humble game jam beginnings. You can also find links to the latest alpha builds of the desktop version of the game there, which you can play for yourself on itch.io for as little as $7.50. Dicey Dungeons is also heading to mobile, and while there’s no release window just yet the team says they’re “into the final stages of development now, and things are starting to fall into place" so hopefully it won’t be too long until we can get our hands on this very promising title.
