One of my favorite releases of 2018 has been Minesweeper Genius ($1.99) from developer Mother Gaia Studio. It takes the classic Minesweeper mechanics that we all know and love and dresses it up with some Sudoku and Picross influences to create a puzzle game that’s endlessly entertaining. You can actually read much more about Minesweeper Genius in our review as well as our Game of the Week writeup from when the game launched this past May, but to put it succinctly: This game is crazy awesome. And now for the first time since release Minesweeper Genius is on sale for half off during the holidays, specifically from today until January 3rd. It was only $1.99 to begin with, but you really can’t beat 99¢ if this is one you haven’t picked up before.
That’s not all though. You may notice that Minesweeper Genius hasn’t received any sort of update since its release, and while all the puzzles in the game are randomly generated on the fly, there is a structured campaign to play through and if you’ve done that already then you might feel like some additional content would be nice. Well Mother Gaia is in the midst of porting Minesweeper Genius to Nintendo Switch and other consoles, and that version will contain a new “Custom Level" mode where you’ll be able to set your parameters like grid size and whatnot and generate a brand new level to play. Basically endless replayability. Once the console versions hit in Q1 of next year, that mode will be ported over to the iOS version of Minesweeper Genius. Until then though, if you haven’t given this one a go definitely pick it up while it’s on sale and don’t be surprised if it sucks you in in a big way.
