SwitchArcade Roundup: ‘Mario Tennis Aces’, ‘Sonic Mania Adventures’ Episode 4, and New eShop Sales!

Welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for June 22nd, where we’re catching you up on the latest Nintendo Switch news, new releases, and sales! A bunch of new sales went live recently after the June 21st E3 sales ended, so there’s tons of discounts to be had right now. I’m planning on wasting my weekend with Mario Tennis Aces while I also blast the new Khemmis album, Desolation, because that thing is a monster. If you like doom metal, or just good music in general, especially if you like album covers that belong on the side of a van, check it out.

News

Sonic Mania Adventures Episode 4 out now

The latest episode of the Sonic Mania cartoon miniseries is now up on YouTube! And once again, it’s really good. Sonic Mania Plus comes out next month, and this episode lets you see Mighty and Ray in action, both in the cartoon, and in the gameplay footage at the end. Mighty the Armadillo might at least be familiar to anyone who played Knuckles’ Chaotix (hello to the other 12 people that owned a 32X and played that game) though Ray the Flying Squirrel is only from the obscure SegaSonic the Hedgehog arcade game.

Squids Odyssey is coming to Switch

Remember the Squids RPGs for iPhone? Where you fought with, well, squids, launching yourself around arenas and battling enemies? Well, good news, that series saw release on 3DS and Wii U, and now it’s coming to the Switch on July 5th. You know, I bet there are more classic games like this from mobile’s golden age that would shine on the Switch…

Arena of Valor beta begins on June 28th

The MOBA genre is surprisingly still barren on Switch, as the shooter genre starts to populate the platform. Tencent’s Chinese mega-hit is set to land on the Switch later this year, and the beta begins next week, and you can still sign up for it. Hopefully this releases soon, I’m curious to see how this plays with a controller or if it still involves touchscreen in someway.

New Releases

Mario Tennis Aces ($59.99)

The Mario Tennis series returns, with an RPG-style campaign similar to the Game Boy entries in the series, and online multiplayer. I eventually fell in love with the new elements during the online tournament demo, and am definitely looking forward to playing this one. Sadly, I ordered from Amazon for the 20% discount and it got shipped via UPS, so time to wait until sundown for them to deliver it! Expect streaming tonight or this weekend on our Twitch channel because I was decent in the demo, and am ready to commit tennis homicide once again. Seriously, you can break people’s rackets and win by fatality in this game. What a time to be alive.

Musynx ($29.99)

This rhythm game uses DDR-style controls, where you have four lanes of notes to hit to the beat. Now here’s my question: can you use an actual dance pad for this? Plugging one in with adapters is certainly possible, but can the controls be configured? And if you do that, then can you also play Crypt of the NecroDancer with said pad? Hmm!

Johnny Turbo’s Arcade: Wizard Fire ($7.99)

Flying Tiger Entertainment’s collection of Data East arcade games continues with Wizard Fire, which I’m not quite familiar with, but I am digging the look on this one. It’s a unique isometric perspective, and there look to be some interesting boss battles. You might need to play this one to see how well it holds up, but hey, old arcade games at least have a really cool aesthetic that’s hard to replicate nowadays.

Pode ($24.99)

This co-op puzzle platformer, in top-down 3D and not side-scrolling for a change, has you playing as a rock and a fallen star, Bulder and Glo, as they explore a lost civilization, solving puzzles and discovering the secrets of Mount Fjellheim. As that name tips, this is inspired by Norwegian culture, and in a more respectful way than audio company Schiit uses. They have a product named the Eitr. The Schiit Eitr. And yes, the company’s name is pronounced the way you’re thinking. I can get into all kinds of audio subculture drama, but I’d probably recommend just playing this instead of getting into that wormhole.

Gunbird 2 ($7.99)

Zerodiv’s collection of Psikyo shoot ’em up releases continues with this one. I feel like this one kind of stands out because I recall it releasing in the days of the Dreamcast, and that logo is definitely from that era of games. Anyway, if you like shoot ’em ups, Psikyo has a unique style to them and this is another solid one from the developer. Plus, Zerodiv added portrait/tate mode play so you can use this in vertical mode. Considering the Switch can be played on a stand in portrait mode easily, monitor mounts that can rotate 90 degrees exist, and that Flip Grip is on its way, the Switch might usher in a new era of cool portrait-mode games.

Lost in Harmony ($6.99)

This auto-runner game features levels set to individual tracks, and it features a story from the co-creator of the game Valiant Hearts. This one was fun on mobile when it released a couple of years ago, and if you want it on Switch, definitely consider it.

Drawful 2 ($9.99)

Jackbox Games delivers a standalone sequel to a game which appeared in of its Jackbox Party Packs. A player on a phone or tablet draws something based on a prompt, and then other players have to guess what the prompt is from a multiple-choice question. Theoretically thousands of players could play at once through the companion app, so if you have a streaming audience, or a particularly large gathering, consider this one!

ACA NEOGEO THE LAST BLADE 2 ($7.99)

HAMSTER’s release for the week! I never get why anyone would name a game “Last/"Final"/etc. because then you release a sequel and it just looks silly. Anyway, this is a weapon-based NeoGeo fighting game, so expect gorgeous 16-bit visuals and animation from this late-era fighter.

Vegas Party ($24.99)

Remember those casino games on consoles that let you wander around a casino and play a bunch of games? I remember one where you could just like…leave. It was on the Genesis, and I’m trying to remember what it was because this game reminds me of that. Hey, at least this 3D casino game doesn’t have any purchases, and is about more than just racking up untold amounts of fake money, because there’s actually a campaign and…environmental disasters?! What?!
