SwitchArcade Roundup: ‘Fortnite’ Countdown, ‘Runbow’ Release Date, and the Death of the Virtual Console

Welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for June 18th! We’ve got a few news pieces, and a roundup of a ton of sales, because the ride never ends, folks. I’ve seen some complaints recently about people saying the Switch doesn’t have enough content later this year. What are you talking about? The Switch gets a dozen games a week, and while many are ports, you’re telling me that you’ve played every single new game that once popped up on the eShop? I’m calling shenanigans. While the Switch might not have the AAA third-party lineup quite yet, it’s absolutely overflowing with killer indies, and Nintendo’s released some heavy hitters so far. Be patient, and enjoy all the great games, no matter who made them.

Fortnite gets strange countdown on Switch, and 4.4 Content Update tomorrow

A strange countdown timer, with the zero time being sometime on Tuesday, June 19th, appeared in the Switch version of the game…and only the Switch version. Strange! Could it be the introduction of cross-platform progression? I imagine that it would take a client update to sort out the issues that have now arisen, especially with people playing on new accounts. Or maybe Epic just wants to give some teases for their new Switch players. Hmm!

People digging into the game files think a rocket launch is bound to happen soon, with the 4.4 Content Update happening tomorrow, and the launch, or at least the ability to launch the missile in the villain’s lair on Snobby Shores, is set to happen at 8:00 AM PDT on Tuesday…hmm.

For players new to Fortnite, downtime rolls around every week, currently on Tuesday mornings, at 4:00 AM EDT (1:00 AM PDT), to release new clients and update the servers for new updates. Downtime is usually an hour or less!

The Virtual Console is dead, long live Nintendo Online

Reggie Fils-Aime, the long-time Nintendo CEO who has seen the company through thick (the Wii, the Switch) and thin (the Wii U) says the Virtual Console is dead. And Nintendo Online, with its classic games? That’s the replacement. I’m disappointed, if only because I would like to have a bunch of GBA classics on my Switch. Oh well, I’ll just have to play them on one on of the many devices I can emulate my library with, I guess. Also, if a massive library of classic Nintendo games comes with Nintendo Online, maybe we won’t miss the Virtual Console at all.

Runbow Switch release date July 3rd

While you can find this game pretty cheap if you own a Wii U, literally nobody owns a Wii U. You own a Switch, like a normal, functioning human being. And the fun battle platformer Runbow, with nine-player online multiplayer, is finally coming to Switch! The game has been in the works, but it saw delays…until the final release date of July 3rd. For real this time! Plus, a physical release is on its way later this year.

Sales

Seriously, that E3 sale ending on June 21st either had more games than even I realized, or a lot of developers decided to jump in on the festivities. There are so many games that go on sale on the eShop now, that it’s ridiculous. You know there’s a “View More" page now? Because that’s how many games go on sale. Nintendo perhaps needs to get some of these developers to cool it, perhaps by telling some of the publishers who use sales regularly to use them more infrequently, or approving sales at certain times. That sales page has become ridiculously clogged, though perhaps it’ll get better once the E3 sale is over. Or maybe not! Here’s all the E3 sales, ending on June 21st. I’ve bolded the ones I personally recommend.

  • World of Goo ($7.99 from $9.99 until June 21)
  • Zombillie ($2.49 from $4.99 until June 21)

I’m not gonna lie, I think I like Ultra Street Fighter II better than the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection. The arcade difficulty on SSF2 Turbo is ridiculous, and I like the extra features on USF2. Still, hard not to justify buying both if you’re a Street Fighter fan.
