French publisher ARTE already dropped a great mobile game on us a couple of weeks ago called Vandals ($3.99), and while it’s highly derivative of the Hitman/Lara Croft/Deus Ex GO series of turn-based stealth games, it’s still a game I enjoyed a ton. Now they’re already getting set to release their next mobile title, and it’s one that I’m incredibly excited about. It’s called Homo Machina, and it’s based on German physician Fritz Kahn and his groundbreaking diagrams of the human body. Kahn would depict the workings of the human body as tiny people running a “factory" made up of different “rooms" which made those workings more understandable to the layperson. They’re also just tons of fun and a perfect inspiration for a video game. The studio behind Homo Machina is Darjeeling and as you can see in this trailer they’ve essentially brought these Kahn diagrams to life.
You might remember that we got an extended hands-on demo of Homo Machina back at GDC in March, and simply adored what we saw. Darjeeling has really captured the authenticity of Kahn’s work, and I’d like to imagine that were he alive today and able to make animated versions of his illustrations that they’d look exactly as they do in Homo Machina. The game itself is sort of an exploratory point-and-click adventure where you’re encouraged to poke and prod at every little thing in the human body factory just to see what it does. You’ll guide that body through a full day as it embarks on one of the more stressful events in a person’s life: Going on a first date. It should be a ton of quirky fun. You’ll be able to grab Homo Machina when it launches on both iOS and Android on May 17th for around five bucks.
