Last week we came across a very cool looking upcoming game called Age of Solitaire (Free) which looked to blend the classic solo card game with elements of city-building, and just as promised, Age of Solitaire has arrived in the App Store. At the time of posting the trailer last week we weren’t exactly sure if the city-building elements weaved directly into the gameplay or were just more of a fun way to add some sort of progression system to a Solitaire game, and after having finally played the game myself I can say it’s definitely in the latter camp. Not that that’s a bad thing mind you; having a sense of progression in a game like this is very welcome and it’s fun to slowly build up different elements of your city starting all the way back in the Stone Age. That said, there’s probably still an opportunity for someone to figure out a neat way to blend in the city-building elements into the actual gameplay itself. For now though Age of Solitaire seems like a solid game if you’re looking for a new Solitaire app with a bit of a twist.
Age of Solitaire is free to play with persistent banner ads at the top of the screen that can be disabled for a $1.99 IAP. You can also buy a 1 Card Draw mode (the default is 3 Card Draw) for another $1.99. Finally, there are some consumable helper items you can buy: Hints that will show you if there’s a move you can make, Undo which is self-explanatory, and Shuffle which will shuffle the unused cards in the deck and the un-flipped cards in the playfield should you get stuck with no moves to make. These are all pretty much “cheater" items and aren’t necessary, and the 1 Card Draw IAP sort of is too, but I definitely snapped up the ad-disabler as I’m enjoying Age of Solitaire quite a bit so far. If you’re jonesing for a new Solitaire game give the free download a shot and check out more impressions from players in our forums.
