A wise philosopher once stated about a potential new game from Grumpyface, the studio behind a bunch of genuinely good Cartoon Network games and some Adult Swim originals: “NEW STEVEN UNIVERSE RPG OR WE RIOT." Well, said philosopher’s monkey paw wish came true, as Steven Universe: Save the Light was announced today on March 9th. The problem is that it was announced for unspecified consoles. Maybe that’ll include the Switch, and possibly PC, but for now, mobile players are out of luck. A Cartoon Network representative said “we’ll see what happens" about a mobile version after the console ones release, so don’t give up hope yet!
Grumpyface is making this one, with help from creator Rebecca Sugar. Expect the console release this summer, and footage from the game this weekend at PAX East. There’s also a TV series and console game coming based on the OK K.O.! franchise, which started off as a mobile game, OK K.O.! Lakewood Plaza Turbo (Free). That got an update earlier this year that Cartoon Network says is the final major update for the game.
I’m a bit disappointed that these aren’t coming to mobile first, but the door isn’t closed. And honestly, for big-name companies trying to do business with paid games (and bringing on developers like Capy Games as CN is doing with OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes for consoles), it’s not hard to fault the consoles-first approach before going mobile someday, possibly. Guess I’ll have to actually pick up a console to play Save the Light soon, though…
