A few months back I wrote about the upcoming Where Cards Fall, a coming-of-age story made in part by Alto’s Adventure ($4.99) developer, Ryan Cash. Today, I got my hands on the first trailer for the game, and it looks wonderful in a pensive – and possibly sad – way. Snowman and The Game Band describe Where Cards Fall as “a dreamlike journey through youthful uncertainty," and I can definitely see the dreamlike part in the trailer. The story is told through the player constructing and deconstructing various structures made from playing cards, and judging from the trailer, the “levels" look similar to games like Lara Croft GO ($4.99), although this might just be my impression.
The developers are trying to make the narrative an organic part of the gameplay by having the story told through the player’s interactions with the game rather than cutscenes. As you can tell, Where Cards Fall is quite the departure from Alto’s Adventure, although I can see a certain pensiveness in both games. Instead of gliding through snow and jumping over ravines, in Where Cards Fall you’ll recreate memories and travel through all kinds of places, even visiting towns in the sky. I don’t know when the game will be released, but I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
