Back in February, developer Lucky Kat announced an interesting new game called Combo Critters, which was something of a hybrid between matching games like Threes! ($5.99) and monster collecting-and-evolving games like Pokemon. It was a neat idea on paper, but the early prototypes turned out to be a bit too convoluted and not a lot of fun, so by the time we saw the game at GDC in March it was quite a different animal. The focus was more on the battling and collecting aspects, as well as combining various monsters to create new types of monsters. Well, the long journey is nearly over, as today Lucky Kat announced that Combo Critters is finished and launching next week on July 14th. Here’s the most recent trailer.
I never even knew I was a fan of monster battling games, but then Teeny Titans ($3.99) showed up in my life and I haven’t been the same since. I’ve always really liked the idea of combining different monsters together and creating crazy hybrids that Combo Critters promised, but now I’m even more excited to take those creations into battle as well. I’m a huge fan of Lucky Kat’s previous game Sky Chasers (Free), so I’m very curious to see how the final iteration of Combo Critters turned out. Look for it next Thursday, and in the meantime hit up the forum thread for some discussion.
