It isn’t a proper release day on the App Store if a Kairosoft game doesn’t drop now and then. Skyforce Unite! (Free) is the newest in their long line of simulation games and appears to be rather left field for Kairosoft’s standard, with the game presenting a bizarre amalgamation of a traditional RPG, a card based fighter, and an airplane collection simulation.
You can collect numerous different types of planes, from fighter jets to choppers and gunships, with varying stats and traits. You then take them into battle against land based creatures and vehicles with Pokemon-style elemental types such as wind, water, lightning, or earth. Each plane you take along has specific resistances to these types, and so a clever choice of craft is vital to ensure you don’t get shot down on your expeditions and to bring peace to time mysteriously titled ‘Uncivilized Land’.
Skyforce Unite! has already had a launch on PC and Android and has received a relatively warm reception, even with some questions over the restrictions of the Free to Play pricing model. With an extremely detailed wiki page detailing the numerous different customizable elements of the game coupled with the trademark retro charm Kairosoft has mastered over the years, it appears if you can get past the timers and energy requirements this is yet another solid strategy game to add to their extensive catalogue. At the very least, we’re one release closer to potentially getting Game Dev Story 2, which six years later I’m still hoping and praying we see a release for. Maybe one day.
