As our own Andrew called it in his review, Punch Club ($4.99) is a gut punch of nostalgia whose tropes and references will make the older ones among you smile up until the point when the grind kicks in. Despite the grind, Punch Club is a pretty entertaining and quite complex game, and now that the game has received The Dark Fist expansion and a price drop, this is as good as time to get it as any. If you haven’t checked out the game yet, Punch Club is a boxing tycoon management game with multiple branching story lines, most of which will remind you of movies from 20, 30 years ago. The game has both tycoon and RPG elements, and, in a departure from most tycoon games, it’s heavily story-driven, which makes it stand about among most other tycoon games on the App Store.
The pixel art is, as you can guess, an homage to the 80s-90s video games, but don’t let the art full you; this is a pretty modern sim game dressed in 80s clothes. The new expansion, The Dark Fist, adds around 3 hours of new content that you’ll start seeing around day 6. You’ll get to find out what happened to (spoilers) Fluffy the cat, and now there’s a hardcore mode where your opponents level up alongside you, cloud saves that allow you to continue your game on multiple devices, expanded main music theme, and more. And, for those who think paying $4.99 for a fully-premium game is the first step to bankruptcy, you can now get Punch Club for $2.99.
