Last month we learned via a brief teaser video that Upopa Games was prepping a sequel to their 2014 hit Hopeless: The Dark Cave (Free) and spinoffs Hopeless: Space Shooting (Free) and Hopeless: Football Cup (Free). All three Hopeless games were centered around a similar mechanic: Your character in a fixed position in the center of the screen fending off enemies (or soccer balls) that were quickly approaching you from all sides by tapping to shoot them, while also avoiding tapping and shooting your buddies who were coming to join you.
The Hopeless series are simple games about making split-second decisions with limited visibility, wrapped up in a slick art style and a number of upgradeable weapons and various game modes. Hopeless 2 again visits this concept, but takes it on the road–or more accurately, the rails. You’ll be traveling along in a minecart as you fend off enemies by shooting them and welcome your friends into your group for safety by hopefully not shooting them. Here’s a look at a lengthier trailer than the teaser we saw last month.
Hopeless 2 was originally planned for release on Halloween, which given its dark and creepy art style would have been a perfect fit. However, game development doesn’t always go the way a developer hopes, and instead Hopeless 2 launched just a few days after Halloween over on the Google Play Store. It’s now gone through the Apple approval process as well, and is set to launch on iOS this week for free on November 26th. I enjoy the Hopeless series and am looking forward to see the tap-to-shoot action go mobile in minecarts, with I’m sure plenty of new weapons and monsters to blast along the way. Look for Hopeless 2: Cave Escape on Thursday.
Correction: According to the note from the developer, Hopless 2 did in fact launch before Halloween on Google Play despite its game page stating the release date as November 4th.
