‘Metro 2033: Wars’ Soft Launches (?) in New Zealand

This is a bit of a strange story as we’re still waiting to hear what exactly is going on here, but it would appear that Metro 2033: Wars has soft launched on the New Zealand App Store. You might be thinking, “Well, what’s so weird about that, games soft launch all the time." The difference here is Metro 2033: Wars isn’t a free to play game, it costs the equivalent of $7.99 US and is already available on Google Play. Is this a soft launch, the App Store being weird, or a bit of both? My Magic 8 Ball is unsure.

At first glance, the game seems really rad. It’s based on Dmitry Glukhovsky’s best-selling novel series, Metro 2033, which you might also know from the shooter with the same name released on the PC and Xbox back in 2010. It’s the same universe, just rejiggered to be digestible in a form that makes sense for mobile devices. Here’s the gist, from the iTunes description:

Metro Stations have become city-states run by new and emerging Factions, uniting its members around ideas, religions, water, or simply the need to survive. Your daily existence centers around gathering resources necessary for survival, repelling attacks of mutants, exploring and conquering new metro stations and developing armed mercenary units when the need arises. To survive, you’ll have to build necessary facilities at Stations, establish diplomatic relations with your neighbors and uphold the economy of your little underground state.

Sounds cool, right? Either way, we’ve got a thread in our forums filling up with first impressions and gameplay videos like these:

Stay tuned for more information on Metro 2033: Wars as we figure out if this is some kind of weird soft launch, or if the game just randomly pops up available worldwide later today.
