Free to Play Magic the Gathering Game ‘Magic Duels’ Hits the US App Store as a Universal App

TouchArcade Rating:

Looks like we’re in for another wacky Wednesday of game releases as games randomly appear for sale both specifically in New Zealand and worldwide with seemingly no consistency as to why. Well, moments ago Magic Duels (Free) went live worldwide. You may remember it from our E3 coverage when the game sported the “Origins" suffix which seems to have been dropped in its final release. Either way, it’s very much Magic the Gathering that’s been given a Hearthstone (Free) spin in that now it’s totally free to play and card packs are earned through a similarly generous in-game economy of earning and spending coins.

More interesting than that though, as mentioned in our E3 coverage, moving forward all future card set releases are going to be funneled through Magic Duels which is going to give the game way more staying power than the previous Duels of the Planeswalkers games which often got a little boring once you unlocked everything. I’m also super curious what this means for the future of Magic Online, as the universal rule of mobile free to play popularity basically dictates that in the not too distant future more people will be playing Magic Duels on a daily basis than have ever played Magic Online. Wizards has held fast on the idea that they’re just going to be two different product lines, but, we’ll see.

Anyway, much like Hearthstone, Magic Duels is quite large and will take up just under 1GB of storage on your device. Keep an eye on our Mobcrush channel as I’m going to be streaming some Magic Duels as soon as I finish compiling the rest of the “Coming Tonight" post. Also, we’ve got a thread in our forums that’s currently exploding.

Can we elect to send one of the 2 on a one way mission to Mars??

    2. RowdySunstrider

One can't DeNa that there's been some weird pillow talk since the two came home from the DeNa.

      1. Holcman

I see what you did there...

Laugh all you want guys, but they are not wrong, that kim kardashian game got downloaded by tons of people and made the top charts for quite a while.

Which is exactly why we fear for this venture between Nintendo and DeNA. Not because the resulting games may be so popular and downloaded by millions (that would happen even if Nintendo went into mobile alone, which I don't understand why they didn't in the first place); but because they probably will show up with a lame, shallow game as that Kim K one and downloaded millions of times regardless.

I was more talking business and money-wise. I would be the first one crying if it really ends up like that Kim K game, we will see how it goes, latest DeNa game i played was FF:RK (which im proud to say i got the very first app store review on, hahahaha) and it is actaully really good.

          Lets stay positive !

            What the heck is FF:RK?

              Final Fantasy: Record Keeper

I prefer to be skeptical and be proven wrong than optimistic and later disappointed.

Either way, we won't be seeing anything from this venture until next year so we can't do much but wait.

There is literally ZERO chance Nintendo allows their first real foray into mobile gaming to be some loser piece of crap game. It just won't happen..

I agree and while I don't think they would allow their first game to be some cheap rubbish type of game that doesn't mean I will auto-love the release just because it is Nintendo. They put out a bunch of stuff on their consoles and handhelds that I have zero interest in. I'm just relatively certain it won't be a weak effort.

I am no Kardashian fan but the girl is a genius at marketing herself and her family. She has 40 MILLION Instagram followers. She started off with a pretty face and a bit of name recognition from her dad being on the OJ Simpson dream team of lawyers and she parlayed that into millions and millions of dollars (yes that bad sex tape put her over the top but she ran with it)

Yep, good looks and high end escorting will get you places.
I remember when she hung out with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. They used to call her their "maid" and she was basically treated like shit going through big stars' houses organizing their clothes and fashion.
Look where hse is now. Her sex tape launched her career and she banked on that to get more publicity, escorted and fucked her way to the top.
It's the pimp mother behind it all tbh. She's the brain behind it all and there are even rumours she's the one who leaked the tape.
Frankly I can't hate the hussle. If I had good looks and a family to back up that way of life (sugar daddies etc etc) I would do it in a heartbeat. Instead I am here, saving cents after cents, and being refused my second-year Masters even though I passed all exams of my first-year (stupid French system).

Can't wait to play these games! Nintendo games will be a great fit for mobile in my opinion!

    5. Tim Cant

Imagine if they make a game that's actually like playing a good Nintendo game! It'll surely never happen, but just imagine <3 <3 <3

      1. Milotorou

Thats called running a snes or gba emulator, xD

      2. David Dixon

Those games never really fit mobile. As they were not meant for them.

    6. falco

Of course if they do, it will be some old Gba games.

      1. AdamBoy64

I think they've already ruled out ports, which is.. good, I guess.
Though I would have liked to have seen 'Puzzles & Dragons: Super Mario Bros' on mobile.

They may change their mind though.

    7. Benjamin Rodriguez

As a huge fan of FFRK, I can only hope this partnership gets Nintendo some good profits. Secretly I think we all root for Nintendo and hope they do well. If they do well, who knows, maybe they'll start releasing some IPs themselves into the mobile market

    8. alduinslayer

Watch mother 3 be released only on mobile

    9. anabolicMike

AnabolicMike don't care about no Kardasian people

    10. AdamBoy64

I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with.
      Exciting times ahead.

      RIP SATORU IWATA!!!!! T_T

I understand the point, but it still doesn't sound good. :/
