‘Cartoon Survivor’ is a Runner That’s Less ‘Crossy Road’ and More ‘Crash Bandicoot’

You might see the isometric view and somewhat blocky visuals of upcoming game Cartoon Survivor and think that it’s yet another game aping Crossy Road (Free). You might watch the trailer and think your suspicions have been confirmed. You would be dead wrong. Cartoon Survivor is instead a prety nifty auto-running platformer that’s coming to mobile next week, bringing a dodo bird with dynamite strapped to its back to your iOS device.

Doo Doo, the doomed dodo, must try to make it to the end of each level before the fuse detonates. Now, where things get interesting is that you can choose from one of three times for the fuse to detonate by, with a different star rating for each time. It’s probably not as clean as just having extra stars for just completing the level a certain amount of time the fuse detonates, but hey, what are you gonna do. You can only die by running out of time; crashing into an obstacle will slow you down and cause you to lose coins. Coins can be used to buy new costumes and helmets, with video ads that can be watched to double your coin haul.

Spunge Games claims an inspiration from late-1990’s 3D platformers, and honestly, I felt that vibe before they explicitly mentioned it. It’s vaguely Crash Bandicoot esque, in particular. Expect this one to release next Thursday, May 28th, as a free download.
