TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘Grim Fandango Remastered’

TouchArcade Rating:

The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best" thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.

These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.

Without further ado…

Grim Fandango Remastered

Grim Fandango came at a turning point in the video game industry way back in 1998. LucasArts had spent the past decade dishing out classic after classic in the 2D pixel art adventure game genre, but the world of video games was already turing towards three dimensions. Grim Fandango tackled this in a novel way with 3D polygonal character models set on pre-rendered backgrounds, giving it a more modern look while maintaining that trademark LucasArts adventure game feel. It was also one of Tim Schaefer’s big projects after Monkey Island, and helped catapult him to legendary status. Grim Fandango is just a bona fide classic in every way, and now you can carry it around with you in your pocket.

Grim Fandango Remastered ($4.99) was announced at E3 last year. After securing the rights to the Grim Fandango IP, which had been with Disney since they purchased LucasArts in 2012, Tim Schaefer’s new company Double Fine Productions set out to remaster the classic title. The remastered version launched on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and desktop back in January of this year, and seeing as Sony helped Double Fine procure the Grim Fandango IP from Disney, it kind of felt like those were the only platforms where it would show up.

Thankfully that wasn’t the case, as this week Grim Fandango Remastered surprise launched on iOS and Android. As has been the case with many classic games that were ported to mobile, this is an awesome chance for a whole new generation of gamers to experience the cult-classic, award winning game Grim Fandango. So whether you were a huge fan of Grim Fandango in the past, or you’ve yet to experience it, everyone should go grab this new mobile version of Grim Fandango Remastered and clear your calendar for the weekend. It’ll be worth it.
