‘Pie in the Sky: A Pizza Odyssey’ Review – Stuffed Crust

TouchArcade Rating:

Some runners are so seamlessly crafted that they don’t even feel like runners at all. That’s definitely the case with Pie in the Sky (Free), partially because of the fact that you are actually flying rather than running, and that it manages to strip most instances of repetition in favor of a more cohesive frame, similar to the old classic Paperboy.

Starting off as a modest delivery driver, you’ll have access to a basic car (that can fly) and generic toppings. Wait, a flying car? Yep, Pie in the Sky manages to instantly transport you to another realm at the very start, kicking things off on the ground as you take off into the great expanse of space to deliver pizzas to alien lifeforms. It’s absurd, but the sleek cartoon visuals sell the premise quite well and evoke that neon feel of the ’80s to a tee. The soundtrack also fits like a glove — the developers really poured their love of the era out on the screen.

Once you’re actually up there, your car can be controlled by way of tilting, with a quick tap to throw pizzas to the appropriate targets. Movement is automatic, hence the runner pedigree, and that’s essentially all there is to learn outside of some nuances like shields and extra movement powers. Naturally, upgrades fuel your fire here as you’re able to personalize your own pizzeria, name it, and pick your own toppings, which grant small bonuses to your score.

Keep in mind though that Pie in the Sky is mostly built on a therapeutic principle. There is no overarching story, no evil rival Martian pizzeria to quash. There are no missions or objectives to complete, which is a bummer if that’s your thing. Instead, the “endgame" is actually playing the game, as you attempt to upgrade your ship and gain access to more wonderful toys. Plus, putting pills on your pizza as your signature topping is pretty funny.

IAP is kept to a minimum, but since the game is a premium purchase itself at $2.99, I’m not crazy about a tip (read: score) doubler for $1.99. It doesn’t inherently break the game as tips come hard and fast at the standard rate, but it feels like something that should have been balanced in the core release — especially without a campaign.

Pie in the Sky: A Pizza Odyssey may not be for everyone, but those of you who enjoy a good relaxation-based affair will get a good amount of time in with it. Still, I hope the developer ends up adding more content at some point, because they’ve created a pretty interesting universe.

    2. MrThickDick

Is it possible to buy equipment in this game? I'm not sure if it's not possible or I just overlooked it. Also, I can't wait until Tuesday.

    3. Leo Koester

      What a shity game...

      1. Lightning Storm

Yeah, total waste of your money, Amirite? Nah. Hate the player, not the game.

        1. Leo Koester

I'm not even sure if it can be called a game: no strategy, no known characters without spending real money and a bunch of generic chars mimicking real ones.

          Waste of time.

      2. Trace Cully

your a shity person and do not know its true poentail.

        1. Leo Koester

Pretty choice of words, buddy. Good point... #not
There's no ponytail in this game. Nor a potential.

          1. Dude

What do you expect from a game you play on your phone? Your expectations are set way to high for a phone game dude. Complain about an Xbox game or Play Station because those are they games that we have to pay $70 on. The game is free... Why are you complaining?

            1. Leo Koester

This is not a free game, but a freemium one. Yes, you don't need to spend a cent on it if you don't want, but the developer REALLY want you to, using all sort of limitations to make you do so.

I understand this is a phone game, but phone games (and even "free" ones) don't need to be things like this just because. There's a lot of games at App Store that would make "phone games" proud if compared to console ones: Evolution, Major Mayhem, Hambo and all that Angry Birds stuffs just to cite some free-to-play.

              1. Dude

Lol someone hasn't found out about the souls glitch. Wow... Bravo you're so brilliant dude. I finished all the levels in the game so far. Also, guess what I have not spent a cent on the game.

                1. Leo Koester

Try to diminish my intelligence will not make the game better, you know.
                  ...
And if you need to play through a glitch, that will be fixed as soon as the developer realize, you're not all that Einstein either...

                  1. Dude

Easily stock up on golds making around 300 souls an hour. The glitch isn't going to be resolved just like that... It takes time. We have plenty of time to make souls. And sure the game is tap tap tap but a great mobile device game won't be handed to you on a silver platter my friend.

    4. Sabaki

So the crux of this game is to build a large pool of gold characters but here's the issue, souls.

You need a minimum of 150 souls to buy a pack or more, depending if you want a specific character.

Initially the game dishes out quite a few when you go through the introductory part of the game and beat towers for the first time.

After that it comes down to leveling up your profile level, daily missions or daily lucky cards. You're looking at maybe 20 souls a day...do the math

    5. ypai1217

There is an issue currently which does not let you login online properly and so earning alliance credits and recruiting allies for matches is severely hampered. Hopefully they fix this issue soon.

    6. pauldavidmerritt

I'm so tired of seeing these "here's how to win w/o spending real money" topics. That is so low-level. It's trying to woo the public into a state of indifference, to market and package terrible ideas with the bad ideas, while most either have no clue or don't care anymore.

    7. ShemhaZai

      How to fatality ??

      1. Quazonk

By pre-ordering the real Mortal Kombat X, and then going home and doing fatalities. Here there are 0. Yes, you read that right. There are no fatalities in the Mortal Kombat game.

        1. darkcrayon

Umm, when you play the game the first time in the tutorial, at the end there is a fatality... (Haven't played long enough to see others). It was so over the top I started laughing, blasted a hole through sub zero's chest, his heart dangled in the hole, then cut his head in half front-ways, and his brain falls out.

        2. darkcrayon

It is a shame though we can't get a "real" Mortal Kombat game, after all the graphics and animation are pretty good in what they did make.

        3. MrThickDick

This is one problem with the Internet, most people are wrong. There are fatalities and X-Ray moves in this game.

        4. PhoenixP5

Um yes there are lol. Sonya gets one, Quan Chi, Scorpion, and others. Check the facts BEFORE you talk bad about a good game...

      2. MrThickDick

You only get the opportunity in "boss" fights at the top of certain towers. It's the towers that force you to use a certain character.

        1. Anonomation

Hopefully they'll fix this. I consider this a bug

    8. Mekklesack

"Come one, come all!" "Welcome to the 'Brass Ring Toss!' Be astounded at the confounding 3 currency pricing system, bare witness to the futility of player progress at the mercy of constrictive pay walls, and behold the death of rigged games on mobile platforms!" Never before, since the fall of Atari have videogames been so cynically conceived for mere profit alone, giving no enjoyment to the player, what, so, EVAH!!! I bet you're a selfish lover, 'eh WB games?" :P "Come one come all!"

    9. Giorgio Caruso

so yea I don't know if anyone knows but if u turn ur phone off (like power down) all ur energy comes back so my sonya is lvl 7(fused) and Johnny cage is lvl 4(fused) and I have a gold kenshi and I beat the game

      1. Giorgio Caruso

I still like the game no matter what anyone says

      2. MrThickDick

Nice tip, I'm sure it's a bug though so enjoy it while you can.

    10. MrThickDick

You people will NOT be happy when you face the final boss. The final boss is in a tower that has a certain character you must use and the boss can only be hurt by that character. I do have a bit of good news though, you can buy two versions of the character to hurt him with all 3 versions of the same character but that means a LOT of grinding or buying in game currency to buy them. The boss is very powerful so this is definitely NOT an easy battle.

      1. Giorgio Caruso

dude I beat it I had a gold kenshi and it was easy

      2. Giorgio Caruso

also its only kenshi or bronze cards

    11. missouri

Is anyone else having the same issue of not being able to connect to their online profile? I read the faq on the WB support site and nothing worked. Now they want me to delete and reinstall my game - but I never synced my profile so all of my progress and purchases will be lost...hoping it's just a server issue where everyone is having the same issue...

    12. Paige Failing

I don't know if im lucky or not but the first time i used a Kard pack I got Scorpion and the first Kombat pack i got Possessed Kenshi.
Its not hard to get souls, plus if you check your inbox sometimes they give you promotionals, I downloaded it the day it came out and just checked my notification box and it gave me like 80 souls.
I'm just mad that people now can buy the strongest character + 100000 coins + 150 souls for 20 bucks. means when a multiplayer mode comes out then who wins will be who pays the most

    13. Joe Below

That's BS about just keep attacking because Monk and Jaxx have grapple moves. If you're good you can block their first or 2nd hit and break in with a punch between. The AI will NEVER use their specials, lol..

    14. Joe Below

I use all my souls for friend slots. I rake up Alliance cards epic fast.

    16. Terrance

Well I fell for this game cause I spent $55 so I could get Possessed Kenshi, Grandmaster Sub-Zero, and Inferno Scorpion (Highest Payable Characters in game) but at the end of the day... It's just a game. Can't believe I did that

    17. J Hill

You guys are going to say I'm crazy but my silver level 50^5 kenshi is unstoppable literally best value kard in the game I have not been beat in 100 matches honestly the game isn't fun anymore I feel like I'm cheating - sizzler

    18. Bocaaust

The strongest character in the game is kenshi paired with demolition Sonya blade and ninjutsu scorpion. Max out his upgrades and level then equip wrath hammer and brawler gloves. Easily gets 50,000 attack stat. Is completely unbeatable online.

    19. YessCubanB

If only I'd read this info before ending up with Stunt Double Johnny Cage, Hat Trick Kung Lao and Venemous D'Vorah as my gold team. However, the transitions/ tag-ins + special moves work real well with Cage, Kung Lao and silver Scorpion. It's like, fluid between them.

    20. PhoenixP5

      THANK YOU!!

    21. Ajim Ahmed

Who's are golden spec ops carector in dark lord
      kotal khan round 4

    22. halinh

Personally I don't think Kano is that bad of a choice, since he is needed to win tower battles and rack up coins in the long run before we can advance to other gold cards. And tbh souls are mostly earned through daily objectives and towers so yeah he's kinda a ticket for easy wins against silver cards

    23. BJJThaiBoxing

Question regarding Silver Kenshi... If one of his team members is Spec Ops and the other a Martial Artist, wouldn't Kenshi benefit from both of his own passive abilities and gain 40% health & 40% attack? And what would be the best Characters to team him up with, if I were to build a mixed team? (Spec Ops/Martial Artist)
Some feedback would be greatly appreciated!
