Retro ‘Lowlander’ Is (Was?) out with a Prestigious Commendation

TouchArcade Rating:

Lowlander ($1.99) is another one of those throw back retro pixel-junk games we love so much here at TA. This one looks like an Ultima tribute and the most interesting bit seems to be that this one claims to be Lord British approved. We just asked the lord himself, Richard Garriott, if this in fact did get the ultimate Ultima seal of approval. While we wait with bated breath, the trailer for the game is available for viewing below.

For the uninitiated, the Ultima games were the original Gold Standard of western RPGs. The guy who made these games is Richard Garriott, aka Lord British, aka the guy who coined the term ‘Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game(MMORPG)’, aka the guy you already know and I am kinda wasting my time here. No matter how or to what extent you know him, I always remember his Lord British character as being the target of probably the most reknowned virtual assassination/griefing in the history of online games. It’s worth a read if you aren’t aware of it.

So all this to say, its a big deal that this game could have his stamp of approval. Lowlander looks like a fun game that has some cool cultural references, but it definitely has a lot to live up to.

Lowlander was released yesterday, but doesn’t currently seem to be available on the US App Store. Apparently it had some major issues on certain iOS devices, so the developer has taken it down for the time being. Our forums seem to be digging it, so I guess keep your eyes peeled for this one to re-appear soon.
