In conjunction with the release of ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Anniversary Edition’ Blu-Ray next Tuesday, Universal has partnered up with Chillingo to extend the lore even further by way of a mobile farming game, and Kotaku has nabbed the first screens and teaser trailer of the title. The premise of a farming sim featuring E.T. might sound strange, but it actually fits right in line with the movie’s plot. You see, at the end of the movie, E.T. take a little potted plant home with him, something his race needs to save their planet from dying.
In E.T. The Green Planet, the title of the mobile game, that’s exactly what you’ll do: grow various kinds of alien plants to rehabilitate the planet. You’ll also be able to create new hybrid plants by cross-breeding, and of course there’s a social component so you can check in on your friends’ alien gardens as well. Also, I can’t help but sense a bit of irony in the fact that there is a new E.T. video game where the object is to bury stuff.
To be honest, a farming/gardening sim is about the last thing on my list of things to be excited about, but the way this ties in to the plot of the movie is actually pretty interesting, and if it extends the story out further I’m down to see how it turns out. We’ll find out next Tuesday when E.T. The Green Planet launches in the App Store.
