‘Archon’ Drops to $1.99 Ahead of Multiplayer Update

archon 1ReactGames announced that they have dropped the price of Archon to $1.99 (from $3.99) for the July 4th weekend, and have also announced the first free update to the game which is due in July:

The expansion will primarily include the eagerly anticipated multiplayer functionality, allowing you to match your skills against live opponents – with some additional optional features never seen before in Archon!

No details about the Multiplayer option has been revealed, though it seems Bluetooth Peer-to-Peer is the most likely iteration.

The initial release of the game had been well received with some mixed reactions to the virtual d-pad and some complaints about the low level of difficulty in the novice and average settings. Otherwise, however, it does a very good job preserving the spirit of the original game.

Good stuff! I bought Archon at full price, and while it is worth every penny, the low difficulty level made me take it off my ipod after a couple of days. Even at Adept, it is easy to win in a couple of moves without feeling really threatened by the CPU. Multiplayer is good, but CPU strength needs to be adressed as well!

It'll definitely be coming back on my ipod as soon as the update lands though!
    Cheers!

This game is awful. I grew up with this game and this version is an embarrassment. They should be fixing the bugs and game play before adding new features,

Gameplay: The aiming function is nearly impossible to use. If your running from an opponent the accelerometer doesn't work fast enough for you to fire back at the enemy. Also firing on the diagonal is almost impossible. That said, the AI is also so bad in the game that it is hard to lose. The two lower levels are a joke and you'll be beating the "Adept" level on day 2.

Bugs: You can't play the Dark side with the Accelerometer. On the lower levels if you run into the opponent they won't fire on you and you can easily kill them.

Wow! I've just had the three best items of news I could wish for! A price drop AND multiplayer! (The world peace thing turned out to be a hoax.)

Early reviews had me convinced already to get this. And I'm sure the darkside tilt controls bug will be fixed, but I don't think I'd choose to use the tilt method at all anyway.

Whilst I'm sure that the price drop was designed to bump sales (were they a bit lower than expected?), I'm reasonably sure (can't find the specific evidence, but will post if I do) that in various places the developers have:

    1. *explicitly* said that the $3.99 price was an introductory price
    2. that it would not go lower than that price
    3. the price may well rise after the introductory period

I have no problems with devs moving the prices down (or up!) to find the right 'fit', but it's mildly disappointing when it happens despite assurances to the contrary.

Looking forward to the update though.
