They either designed the game around it in order to bleed money from us, or they made it to be enjoyed. That is one of the big red flags, isn't it? Shows right off that they carbon copied the same freemium model perfected by companies like Zynga and took a "me too" approach to game design. Unless the iap is donate to the dev then yeah, otherwise all iaps are out to suck your money. CygnetSeven Well-Known Member Feb 6, 2010 7,582 30 48 #10 CygnetSeven, Jul 19, 2012 You guys do realize this is a free game don't you? To be honest, I'd rather buy a game outright just like the next guy but at least Antony is releasing this free instead of bilking the early buyers by going freemium later like a certain 'Forsaken' developer did. And yeah, after playing it myself, it is truly optional and you don't hit a wall where iap's are necessary. You say you'd rather have a donate to developer iap, I think thats what this is. So it's a free game, either buy it and try it and post your opinions or stop bouncing from one freemium thread to the other whining about it. Okay? MeanTuna Well-Known Member Feb 20, 2012 752 0 16 Writer #11 MeanTuna, Jul 19, 2012 OMG this! Thanks for a sensible approach to the reality of the appstore. dib Well-Known Member Apr 22, 2011 307 0 16 #12 dib, Jul 19, 2012 I don't care if it's free. I have never been bothered to pay for a game and support developers. I have over 300 apps on my account, many of which I will buy on a whim because it's a small developer posting to a site like Reddit. If they feel the game is worth $5, then charge $5. If they feel they stand a better chance staying competitive with the rest of the app store, then charge $1-$2. Don't try to sucker me in with 'free' only to hold your open palm out the rest of the time hoping I'll throw you a few bucks more than I would have paid outright. It's duplicitious, and 'everybody else is doing it' doesn't justify it. CygnetSeven Well-Known Member Feb 6, 2010 7,582 30 48 #13 CygnetSeven, Jul 19, 2012 Nine of the ten highest grossing apps right now are free. It's proven that developers make more money through IAP than through sales. Unfortunately the TA community is a tiny percentage of the buying market. So it is what it is. You can either accept that or continue beating your head against it. I agree with you whole heartedly but it's only gonna get worse. Sorry. MeanTuna Well-Known Member Feb 20, 2012 752 0 16 Writer #14 MeanTuna, Jul 19, 2012 Ha! There's no point anymore in trying to explain. Best of luck Anthony, nice game! Edit: Thanks again CS, thats exactly what I was too lazy to write myself. dib Well-Known Member Apr 22, 2011 307 0 16 #15 dib, Jul 19, 2012 Hopefully IAP wears out its welcome. The more people who keep passing it off as their primary source of income, eventually it's going to sour that mysterious buying market. If and when IAP becomes a mainstream issue that even random imbeciles on iTunes are fed up over it, then with any luck the money will dry up and developers may have to go back to charging for games upfront instead of treating them like unlimited money making machines, followed in the footsteps of such notable examples like $100 smurf berries and Zynga. Until then, people like this are only contributing to the problem. So I will keep banging my head and busting their balls over it until they straighten up and start treating their own customers with some degree of reverence. antony.thai Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2009 2,084 13 38 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam #16 antony.thai, Jul 19, 2012 Thanks CygnetSeven for supporting us! & thanks to dib for telling your opinion too! I completely understand that. Let's me having a chance to explain a bit the situation of many indie developer like me, and how we deal with the current app store. - First, I experienced 2 years already with paid app, tried to make it as good as I can, but with tons of other games in the app store (even 1 year ago), few indies get their success, tons of indies are going to die as they won't have any budget to keep the team alive. The aftermath is that I have to use free promotion in very early stage, and make a lot of my supporters piss off about me, I was also pissing off about what I did too. - So, after few months away from game development and get back again just because I crazy love making game!! I pick another way of my studio, freemium. Why? Because there will be no anymore price barrier that will likely kill most of new developer on the visibility issue. - Then, I know that, what I need now is the visibility, not really money, so in my game, I'm trying to have it completely deal-able without paying anything, I'm testing the game by a non-buyer user experience as well to make sure that happen! This is what Pocket Army is about! And why I'm trying to convince you guys to download it, just because I want to bring fun for any guys that "may" like the game, even they don't like IAP at all, but they still kindly enjoy the game as much as I'm loving it now. PS: And sorry, my English is pretty bad! Hahaha! Greyskull Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2009 5,588 1 38 Photographer/Social Sciences adjunct/sweet sweet l Fort Lauderdale #17 Greyskull, Jul 19, 2012 I did...it doesn't cost anything to try a game out. After only 20 minutes or so of playing, I could tell it would follows the now familiar formula...you've got one "common" currency, that while easy to obtain, is required in huge amounts after a bit of play time. Then you have a "premium" currency, hard to earn, which most likely must be spent almost immediately; walling off a large amount of the game content. The formula also causes one to have to spend their common currency constantly to upgrade instead of being able to save it for the pricier goods. Actually, you played the trifecta...forced wait times that can be "bought" out of. Either you want to annoy players or tempt them to purchase "premium" iap currency. The former will quit playing your game, the latter...well, you better hope it becomes a smash hit because there are much more established "games", owned by gigantic companies, that are chasing that same group of customers. 2 types of currency+wait times? Wait times make sense in games like...Civilization, Masters of Orion, Alpha Centuri, Space Empires, etc...that is what is commonly referred to as strategy; deciding what needs to be done immediately and what is necessary for achieving long term goals and growth. Of course, with those games, there is an END TURN BUTTON! antony.thai Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2009 2,084 13 38 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam #18 antony.thai, Jul 19, 2012 I won't intend to defense for the case at all, sorry if I have any words that make you unhappy. BUT I know what it takes to make a freemium game like Pocket Army, and still, won't drop premium game production in Pine Entertainment at all. Hope that I won't get you now, I will get you later! Greyskull Well-Known Member Dec 13, 2009 5,588 1 38 Photographer/Social Sciences adjunct/sweet sweet l Fort Lauderdale #19 Greyskull, Jul 19, 2012 Your game will die as well. "Freemium" (I detest that damn term, but I'll use it for the sake of being understood) is the new premium, and too many people are buying iaps for CSR Racing, Zynga games, Temple Run, for you to be successfull. I think the only way for dev's that don't have huge dev teams and piles of analytics to make it in the AppStore is to return to creating full, paid games. Another thing...games that use iap currency generally can't be backed up (the game data, I mean) and consumables can't be restored...leaving, I assume, most people who play these games no lasting feeling of accomplishment; probably a sense of wasted time and W Tee Eff did I spend so much time and money accomplishing? I figure it must feel like gambling; when you've already come out reasonably ahead but can't resist going back, losing it all before you walk out in a coctail comped haze. antony.thai Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2009 2,084 13 38 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam #20 antony.thai, Jul 19, 2012 What you talking told me that you did not even checking Pocket Army at all.
