In case anyone missed the news: http://toucharcade.com/2013/03/18/pixel-people-update-to-add-more-missions-buildings-and-some-tweaks/
Nothing wrong with apps like Tiny Tower that don't end. Every floor may just be a reskin, but it's not meant to be played for a long period of time in one session. There's no storyline, or development, so there's no reason for it to end. It's nice knowing that I can just put it away for months at a time, and still be able to get back into it.
Well it looks like restarting has worked out better for me. So far I have rescued 20 animals, 18 different species and already have 3 of the rares! Before I was forced to restart I only had 1 rare.
Except that most people just put it away and don't care about it at all at that point. To paraphrase an old rock song, it's better to burn out than fade away. If I were a game developer, the last thing I want to inspire in my players is complete and total indifference.
Personally, I also dont need a freemium to have a story. Its always fun to have a story but its definitely something I dont need. But the thing I do need is new mechanics. Tiny Tower got boring really fast since it was the same old song and dance with every new building. And then it started to feel like work restocking. I know Id get bored of Pixel People as well if all they gave is were new genes and new buildings. But their upcoming update is already giving us new ways to play, adding new mechanics to old buildings and theyve said that they are looking into ways to refresh all the buildings which imo is a great direction as refreshing buildings would definitely start to feel lile work when you have a lot.
Hopefully this new update gets rid of 2 bugs One is that I get a new job ( mechanic always) when I go into the app the 2nd time. The other is that I have all tier 3 animals but no achievement. How I know is that I have both the last tier 2 and first tier 4 animals. Sure be nice to get that!
Exactly the way we thought about the game. We felt addition of new buildings would become repetitive. So instead, we're working on expanding the content of the game with new experiences and mechanics. The upcoming back to back patches would be an example of that.
That is weird. So, you have all the animals, but no achievement? Okay, are you referring to Game Center achievement? Or in game achievement? You might need to drop me an email: [email protected]
that's weird... i also finished my tier 3 animals, but no pop-up message... go to sheriff -> refresh -> voila pop-up message achievement !!
Got my last rare animal just now!!! Shelter says 438 rescued total. Achievements are complete and now just saving up money (800 mil and counting) and u (500 and counting) for these patches...
Yeah, there's really no depth at all to Tiny Tower, so there's no reason for it to have an "ending." There was no journey, no story, no new skills acquired, so it's just as well that it goes on forever. It has no replay value so it's not like I'll complete it and want to start over. I want to keep my tower as it is, even though I may get tired of the tapping.
As much as I hate to keep this thread derailed about another game, your argument is invalid. The idea that lacking a story, or depth, or that floors were "reskins" (not true at all, but that's what you called them), that it wasn't meant to be played in long sessions, etc., has nothing to do with supporting your conclusion that it might as well just go on forever. They're unrelated elements. Tiny Tower might as well have gone on forever if it were fun for a good percentage of players to have it go on forever. All you need to do is look at the GC data to tell how not true that is - only about 10,000 players out of the roughly 5 million people who downloaded it and played it at least once ever saw all the floors (about 0.2%), and more than 90% of all its players never made it to floor 100 let alone floor 185. I haven't constructed a new floor in more than a year, I'm still sitting pretty in the top 5% of all players and I only made it to 131. So, no, in spite of your claim, there was a very good reason for it to have "ended" sooner: no one, relatively speaking, cared for it to go on anywhere close to as long as it did. What matters is if the game design benefited from being indefinite vs finite, and I can see no evidence that it did. By catering to the far left end of the distribution curve, Nimblebit put a good deal of labor into a project for which they, as developers, got next to nothing in return and for which the lion's share of their efforts were inaccessible to the majority of players due to the ridiculous breadth of the eventual game design. The only winners from the particulars of that game's design were an insignificant percentage of hardcore players who weren't paying for the support. ----- It is reassuring to see Ivan's post a page or two back about how they are looking to keep any updates meaningful and not in the above vein. I wager it will pay off in more ways than one
They're related to me. I don't need an ending in something that has no real progression. It's like an endless mode in a puzzle game. And nothing you posted proved my points "invalid." All your stats prove is that NimbleBit needed to implement some actual gameplay into TT. The tower not ending isn't why people stopped playing; it's the sheer repetitiveness of it. If they stopped at 30 floors and gave you a "Congratulations!" screen would that have made it better? The lack of gameplay caused people to stop so soon. Giving them a goal of a certain number of floors would not have improved that, and that's assuming that the player would even be made aware of which floor would be the final floor. As for NimbleBit putting extra labor into the app...well, that's their call. They kept supporting TT with updates well after it was released, so they must have seen some value in doing it. Maybe it was even just for fun.
If you love this, you guys will love progress quest! It's even more retro, and has just as much meaningful interaction and waiting!
I feel really dumb for asking what's probably very obvious - did the update come yet? I was poking around trying to see find missions for about five minutes before it occurred to me that the TA post said upcoming, not live. I usually hit "update all" without actually looking at what's getting updated.
