Haha - I like it. May be prone to misinterpretation, though... We may, although it won't be for a while. It also depends on the level of interest of our current beta testers (for our old games). If we need new beta testers, we'll put out the call on this thread.
Here's a great preview article from AppAdvice. Trevor did a great job summarizing all the differences between Max Adventure and the other games in the genre.
Broken link, but in the preview I noticed that the sticks looked a little bland, anyway that you guys could give some character to it before the final release?
Thanks for the heads up on the link - fixed it. Yeah, almost everything in the UI is placeholder art right now. We'll be polishing all of that up.
a little tired of dual stick games ala Mini Gore but the Comander Keen vibe makes this one really interesting indeed!
noooo another dual stick shooter ^^' i'll just wait for Revolt & Pirates Treasure, just purchased Alive 4-Ever RETURNS, although this looks really fun
Hehehe, this is why we don't let me do the art for our games I did all UI art as a placeholder for now, Kiril will polish it and make it look cool before we launch. Don't worry! ;-)
This is pretty cool - we just got profiled by Ready Set DC, a local blog about people doing cool stuff in DC. Check out the article for a great interview and pix of us. There are also some fun pictures of us working on Max Adventure. Simulating Me pretending to work The whole team!
oh, I live near Imangi Studios !!! I'm going to stalk you now! is that ipad showing off Harbor Master HD, or something else, like Max ADventure, HD!?!?
Cool! are you in DC too? There are some pix of Harbor Master HD and Imangi on iPad (pixel-doubled). BUT... Max Adventure is also very close to running on iPad
Sweet - preview from TUAW: http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/01/hands-on-with-max-adventure-from-imangi-studios/ Yes, there will be different weapon types and power ups
Rip-off of what? I see quite a bit of comments about this being a rip-off of this or that game Minigore is named a lot. But let's see the original Minigore TouchArcade review: Ah, so then it must be a rip-off of iDracula? Wait, Geometry Wars, the console game? And what about before GW? So all these games must be all the same. You know what? Shut up already! They are all a ripoff of Tinymap anyway (http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=52183). Just look at those graphics! Exactly the same!
In all honesty, having the dual stick setup does not determine the genre of a game -- its just a control scheme. But it seems people often judge a game based on only one minor element that it has, and then lumps in a group with every other game that has that same thing... For example, many think all games with zombies in them are the same (when in reality zombies actually have NOTHING to do with what TYPE of game it is). Just like many think all games with doodle graphics are identical (again, you can have ANY genre with doodle graphics). Or all games with a dual stick control scheme are the same (really its just a control scheme, not the defining trait of a game). All physics based puzzlers are the same, etc. Then again it depends on how you market your game as well. If someone doesn't want their game to be compared with other dual stick shooters for example, they should probably describe the game with what makes it unique, rather then the aspects that a lot of other games do have (not talking about this game specifically, just saying in general ). Solomon's Keep is a good example. It is first and foremost a dungeon crawler RPG, despite having a dual stick setup. Another example is I know we fought tooth and nail to try to get people to not think of our game N.Y.Zombies as "just another zombie game." Anyway, this game looks pretty interesting to me Looking forward to more details.
@MysteryCoconut Thanks Miguel. And you're right - we're definitely ripping off MiniMap In fact, I just implemented a sweet minimap for Max Adventure. I'll have to post some screenshots in a bit. @Foursaken_Media Very good point. It's very natural for people to categorize everything, whether by graphics, theme, or control scheme. But you have to take the good with the bad. We developers tend to be very sensitive to even a small amount of complaining. But if we get some perspective, we see that while 1% of people are complaining that this is "just another dual stick shooter," 99% of people are saying - sweet, a dual stick shooter, I love those! I think it actually helps to be classifiable in a category so people can loosely understand what your game is. Marketing speak aside, Max will really stand out in the category. There are lots of great DSShooters out there, and each new one adds a lot to the category. Max will add an exploration element that I love. Here's how I see the evolution of the genre* on iPhone: iDracula/Minigore: Awesome survival DSShooters Guerrilla Bob: Survival + story mode with linear levels. Meaning that you walk in a straight line to the end of the level, with no way of going back. Your only mission is to kill everything in sight. Max Adventure: Survival + story mode + exploration + different mission types + puzzle elements. - Exploration - Instead of walking down a single street, you can explore a full neighborhood. - Mission types - search and destroy, search and rescue, defend. That keeps the action varied. - Puzzle elements - there are locked off areas that you have figure out how to get into. * I'll limit the genre to cartoony DSShooters. People seem to put Alive4Ever in a different category in their mind, interestingly enough. Maybe the graphics appeal to different audiences?
