Can someone try the new update to Soul Calibur? The cryptic update description seems to hint the iCade is now supported.
I just tried it on my iPhone paired with my iCade and it didn't work. My iPad 1 is incompatible with SC, so I had to test with my iPhone. My other iCade games work fine with my iPhone, but not SC. I downloaded the latest update too. Maybe it'll work on an actual iPad 2, otherwise still no iCade support.
Holy crap. I just tried in iCade this new Shogun game, a top down shooter released yesterday and it's friggin awsome! The first few missions are free to play and the rest is available through in-game purchase. Having followed this thread closely since getting my iCade, I have to say this is one of the most exciting games to come out with iCade support, that is if you're a fan of vertical shooters. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=121018 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4LzFRYe-1c&feature=player_embedded
In a few months time I'm going to be attempting to build an iCade support extension to make it easy for myself and other people using the dev kit I do to implement iCade support, so hopefully the numbers will start to increase. I gotta read more into this iCade thing, people seem to be into it. From what I can see, though, iCade is portrait only? I can't imagine it working very well for Awesome Land, for example... For landscape games like Awesome Land I'd recommend Joystick-It, a little stick-on joystick which works surprisingly well.
Ideally games are portrait but icade allows you to put our ipad horizontally so you can play any games you want to landscape. Portrait looks the best but its not too bad having it landscape and being able to use the arcade controls. Find it weird why some of the 'bigger' companies dont bother with icade controls (i've emailed a lot who seem to suggest its 'complex') yet so many 'one man band's' seem to happily add icade controls in a matter of hours or so ? Dont know enough about it, just some devs say its easy to add. More games the better!
Not portrait only, plenty of games out there are landscape, terra noctis, mos speedrun, league of evil, practically any platformer with icade support and paper monsters soon, biggest platforming release on ios. With iCade you can take the ipad out of the cabinet and place it on the ledge sticking out for landscape. iCade core later makes this even easier, and icade mobile along with all the other bluetooth pads that emulate icade on iphone are almost always landscape, (icade mobile can do portrait as well). I think stick on joysticks like fling etc. might be alright for ipad - but on iphone they take up too much space on the screen to be useful
Paper monsters is out... Buggy i read, but at 99 cents... Why not. I just read in my soul calibur update... "now compatible with that hidden element". Could that mean icade? Why is it a dirty word to apple? Don't they want more games to sell? I use blutrol so most all games work great.... I do wish they would have made the icade 3/4 inch wider so the ipad would fit. Inside it horizontally too. Seems dumb not to, it's so little.
Yeah i thought the same, i'll try it out now Yep its odd why you cant mention icade in the descriptions, the funny thing is a few games do mention controller support or icade. All a bit ridiculous, i do love Apple and iOS but if they were more supportive of say the icade i think they will sell even more apps. I love mobile gaming on my ipod but also love icade gaming with my ipad Update - Just installed Soul Calibur on my ipad, the icade controls didnt work, checked the options but nothing there to switch it to icade controls or that, tried a game but nothing. Weird.
iCade support should be standard for any retro game for the iOS. Once you try retro games on an iCade, there is no going back - it is THE ultimate iOS retro arcade experience! It's actually better than any arcade ever was, it's amazing. Retro game developers that add iCade support show their customers that they also understand the iCade adds SO much to any retro title and want their game to be as awesome as possible. iCade support + retro game = insta-buy. The iCade works in either landscape or portrait mode, but the portrait mode is superior because the iPad fits better inside the cabinet and creates a more realistic illusion of an arcade cabinet. The best way to program a horizontal-style game for the iCade (like Awesome Land) is to allow it to switch to a letter boxed (reduced size) screen in portrait mode. Super Crate Barrel, Pix n' Love Rush DX, and iMAME4all have this feature - horizontal games can be played in either the larger/standard landscape mode, or the reduced/letterboxed portrait mode, and they work perfectly.
To be honest, while I think the iCade is nifty, I don't use it that much. Having to sit at a table to play games instead of sitting on a couch, or in a comfy chair, is a bummer. LOL. I do like the iCade, but I think I'd rather have a game controller and then just prop the iPad on the arm of the sofa, which is mostly how I play games anyway. Unfortunately the iControlPad doesn't duplicate the button layout and the mappings can be unplayable, and has other issues with some games, so it's not a great solution currently.
shogun is out now, bullethell, free for the first level, normally 2, for the rest, temp 1,59, first level feels not that good, japan level better.. still feels like a western developer trying hard to be japanese..
What firmware are you using with iControlPad? 2.0 is latest official but go into the forums and you can find 2.2 with 2 different layouts for icade buttons, and the very useful press-start-and-select-to-get-onscreen-keyboard function. Possibly the second one is a better match for some games? Or iif you aren't scared of jailbreaking do that and use blutrol to create your own control mappings into games, over the top of native icade profiles
Update to this...newer revision of 2.2 firmware for iCP makes the left nub work as a dpad, so its possible to use dpad or left nub now in iCade mode http://boards.openpandora.org/index.php?/topic/5137-new-icp-test-firmware-v21/page__st__40
I've been using that very firmware for some days. Works nice, haven't run into any incompatibility problems - you can safely upgrade.
hi guys just to let you all know the my origional Game Cave Shooter HD for the ipad has now just been submitted to apple with icade control, as soon as it gets approved Cave Shooter HD will go free so if you have an icade no reasen not to try it, as soon as update is live i will post here.thanks colyn
I'll try updating the iCP to the 2.2 firmware. Thanks for the heads up. How do you switch between the two button layouts? And do you have to unpair and repair to do it? I found I had to do that to, for example, use the thing with Vertex whatever-it-is-called. Rather a pain to switch back and forth between that and iCade games. Still, if it can make Super Crate Box playable, I'll be happy.
