Yep this works well. Remember to Tap on the left stick to move forward or backward (not drag your finger). But works well. arn
This is why you shouldn't put too much credence into the iTunes review system...no offense to Duke Nukem. Too many reviews are from people who want to be first, while others are from people who shouldn't even be reviewing toast.
Read the pages - signficant control issues - I am getting by OK, but there are a lot of unhappy people...
I'm such an idiot I got so excited and didn't see it and quickly posted it. I think I might pick it up tonight.
The controls are the worst! I mean I liked the Prey controls but I hate these.... I have to hold my phone in a weird way so i cn press all the buttons.
I'm getting it 'cause I just saw that it is only gonna be $2.99 for a day. I'm pretty sure the controls will work fine. I think.
What a disappointment! I was just about to run on over to the app store and pick it up...but then I read it's not compatible with 1st Gen Touch. I would have been willing to buy it now at the sale price and have faith that the control problems would be worked out; the fact that it may or may not ever be compatible with 1st Gen Touch prevents me from doing that. Therefore, I will miss out on the one-day-only sale price. Sure hope John Carmack is reading this thread--I'd hate to have the same thing happen when he releases his version of DOOM... Really sucks. I was looking forward to this game so much.
There are a couple of schemes that people are using - you can look through the thread to find them but it is playable - just not the experience of the original at this time.
I picked it up. For that 1-day sale price I had to. It's freakin' Duke! Yeah, the controls kind of suck but they're going to be fixed up, so contingent upon that, I'm just happen to finally be able to play Duke on my iPhone -- without jailbreaking.
What does turning off the strafe do, especially if you have to continue using the 'tap' method? If you use the tap method on the analogue controls, it works more or less.
Very immature port for a very decent price. For a "port" i must admit that it is pretty shitty. The frame timing is completely off. I mean, on my iPhone 3G it runs at a avrage 5-30fps (usually in the low end). When looking into the mirror i reach the 3-5 fps, making this game a very painfull expirence on the 3G... When as a contrast the JailBreak copy of Quake 3 runs at 15-25 fps we can only assume that the engine or general game code of this port is very shitty. Meanwhile on my 3Gs this games runs too fast, and due to its render method could use a framerate limiter to avoid this. Well i guess the horrible controls was discussed in this thread and its still a mystery how this came to the appstore with such a major flaw. I like the ammount of options and tweak settings you have, but it is a bit confusing with so many controls to set and no real explanation on what they are good for. I do miss the music, but i can also live without. The sounds also seem to be working perfectly The grapichs looks super nice and the GL render compliments the original art quite good. Overall i think its a very immature port for a very decent price. I mean, 2.99 is not that bad after all... But still the problems with the grapichs makes eighter this developer look very unskilled or Zod'TTD super skilled, when it comes to converting simple engine code over to another platform. 3 out of 6 stars from me.
I'm a big fan of the game, but the issue with the controls is kinda holding me back as well. I saw the front page video... and it wasn't at all pretty. Merely navigating through narrow hallways and doors seems such an arduous task. It's definitely gonna kill the fun factor. I'm particularly worried about constantly adjusting and limiting your movement just to get the right angle, and to be able to execute the desired task. I'm no big tap-to-shoot fan either. The way it is right now, it just doesn't feel right to purchase right away. It seems okay for 2.99, but I'm willing to pay higher just to be able to play it the way I'm hoping it to be played -- "THE" Duke Nukem 3D style -- spontaneous and carefree! I'll stick with my PC for the meantime.
Hey guys, I just picked it up and figured that I could probably figure out a control scheme that works for me. Honestly the analog sticks (which aren't really analog) are not too shabby, took some tweaking in the options and now I'm killing pig cops without too much trouble. But to put this into perspective when I first played Duke Nukem 3D it was before WASD really took off and for Doom, quake, and Duke I was using the arrow keys. Just up, down, left, right. The games back then had auto aiming to make sure you were still hitting the target, this version of DN3D does too which helps to offset the lack of accuracy. Is it ideal? No. Not by a longshot. I want the game to employ a control scheme similar to Terminator or Brothers In Arms, drag to look controls seem to be the most accurate way to do shooters on the iphone. This isn't the travesty that some people are saying, but it will take some getting used to. For $2.99 it's more than fair asking price. It's a decently long game with a good amount of content. I do have some concern for the framerate. It seems to drop when I use and RPG on an enemy and it explodes into pieces, as if the engine can only handle a few sprites. We'll see how it holds up in some of the more chaotic levels.
