Don't worry. There's going to be that magical time when everything comes into place, then you are going to do the especial event, survive, and really be rewarded getting so much stronger to get a better chance of reaching Canada. And it is going to make it even more special. It would be common otherwise, no? The flashing is there for a reason, after all.

The game is TOUGH, there's no doubt about that. If not, getting to Canada would be pretty easy and everyone in the game would be there (Damn, City of Crushed Hopes has this name for a reason). But it is going to feel really rewarding when you finally have that one special run. Make no mistake, not every run is going to be sucessful. Far from it. Death is the most likely scenario.

One second everything is perfect, then something happen and everything starts to fall apart. And vice-versa. Even if you have one character with awful stats and no equipment the next stop could turn everything around. There's always the possibility of something wonderful or awful happen. And it is what makes each run unique.

But if one changes the "win mentality" to "fun mentality", it's going to be an hell of a ride, even when you die.

That's the best advice for this type of game, bar none.

Just like when I played FTL 2 years ago, thats exactly what I did.

Winning or not in this game doesnt matter to me, I just like seeing where the run will carry me, i'll win eventually and of course you often learn from your mistake.

Most roguelikes are like this, you need to go in with a different state of mind, the game is meant for you to lose, repeatedly, sometimes by badluck, sometimes by bad decisions. You cant see half of what the game has to offer without dying a thousand times anyway... even ways of dying are fun to experience

This game is a prove that not all new game Releases need to have game size of 1GB or less, it could be done on only 100 MB, and that its still supporting older IOS, good work for that.

    Great Article

I especially enjoyed the CONCEPT of the article Rob Funnel wrote recently about this game, with regards to our forum members TAKE on the title. TA should do more articles in this manner:)

Ok decided to give this another shot and I'm finding it more and more compelling the more I play! I'm getting through the looting sections more efficiently, and I'm feeling like being part of an often interesting mini-story with each new run. There is still that lingering feeling I always get playing roguelikes in that I'm not making any real progress as I do playing a game like say Uncharted, a bit like being stuck in neutral, but I guess that's part of the genre.

Here's a neat little run I had, of course spoilers ahead so tread carefully: I started with 2 lovely girls who were good at pretty much nothing until they spotted some sort of interstellar gate. Decided to go through it and all of a sudden it seemed their bad traits became good and vice versa and so they went to being really capable gals. I was feeling good until they meet my wife (yeah I had to create her), couldn't strand her by the side of the road and then another freaky hitchhiker with a hockey mask, matcheta and chain saw. That was a really bad move as my original girls started disappearing mysteriously so I decided I had to get the hockey guy killed in combat. Which I did. Only to have him reappear by magic in the car! And then have my wife disappear quickly thereafter! Left only with him, I wasn't able to survive the next siege and concluded the journey about 7 days from Canada but really satisfied in how it all turned out :)

You just had one of the rare character experience in the game, and you uncovered all his quirks without even realizing it. :D

You can do it! I made like 3 versions of Saber for my custom creation (Fate being my favorite series and all). Sakura Saber threatened to tear my team apart. Then Original Saber demanded one person leave the group (and I picked her lol). Only Saber Alter was the one to make it through with me to Canada :p

Recently I made a Sakura Matou and had to sacrifice her to a demon... :S

I think you'll get it eventually! This is one of those games where you learn with each play through. The last sieges just involved me running and shooting in circles at the edge of the screen, trying to bait the zombies in one direction. The game isn't easy on you but it rewards you very well for your work. So far I've found the Chainsaw to be the ultimate weapon as I can save teammates who are about to die with it while doing nasty work myself. I've yet to try the uzi since I couldn't afford to give up 15 food when I first saw it offered :( As for rifles I've only tried the hunting rifle but found the pistol far superior as a gun since the rifle is just waaaay too slow for hordes at the end of the game.

Make sure when you (and others) reach Canada, you tell us how it felt. Because I honestly loved the end so much I want to reach it again. Maybe one day Rocketcat will add alternate endings?

    ======

On my newest run I found the concrete bunker but I must have missed whatever was inside. I went in, grabbed the usual resources, then left. Zombie presence was really big so I didn't want to stick around too long anyhow. Looks like I'll have to visit again some other time.

I also found a wizard at a trading camp asking me to pay him food to read fortunes. I had a good amount of food luckily and paid that punk 20 food to join me instead (even if he is a turd). Everyone, the wizard is a good team member - get him if you can!

Already did.eivetS, the Hero-faced(surgically acquired) Mega Mauler has seen to that.

The uzi is cool. You can find it in-game. In fact, you never know what might be lying around anytime.

Anotherkellydown, hope you like it. I wish it could be even more detailed, but I was on a rush. :(

GiHubb, glad you are liking it more.

Edit: my last run has been crazy. 4 days from Canada. People are getting killed and replaced all the time, stocked around 60 food at some point, got and lost nice hardware and even got a live demonstration by a certain trader of a zombie slicing sword that seemed really great. Unfortunatelly, I didn't have the strenght to be worth of wielding it.

    That is a badass sword.

So aside if the game modes for completion, do finding special events or random things in the game unlock anything else?

You don't get anything special, just a lot of resources and zombies. Just that exploring it is so exciting with so many zombies to pass through and the time constraint of avoiding getting dark ;)

He's a top OP character, helped me win Marathon mode.

For the game contents, you don't unlock anything with special stuff you find.

Hey, I have the right to my opinion, pal. And I don't feel the need to defend myself to anyone if I don't like something! And hello! This forum is to express your opinions about games, in case you didn't know. Not simply a bunch of fanboys who always like everything and have to agree post after post. Sorry bout that!

Please keep posting your custom character screenshots! Those are really cool to see.

Perks/traits info is listed under the perks and traits when making characters. Stats info is scattered around the starter tooltips. So is some weapon info, but not a lot. Weapon info is pretty mysterious by design, though you can very easily argue against that being a good idea.

It would save characters and road progress, but probably not in-mission progress since the game itself doesn't yet.

We'll do some tweaks. Could you talk about the differences you see in this, Wayward, and Crashland? That'd help us focus on what to mess with first.

Thanks! Yeah the game is all about the easter eggs.

Congrats! I'll think about collectibles. I wanted to try not being an unlocked based game for this one at first, but that possibility opens up again with the perk/trait revamp. Might be able to let you spend points to unlock things that aren't perks/traits.

Do most games do this? Or do games provide the option to pick the rotation... any examples?

Haha, just like in the movies. Glad you're enjoying the game now.

    Cool article.

I would love to, but neither the site or the app allows me to.

Did, until now, 27 family/friends members, everyone resembling them and with the corresponding perks/traits. A few didn't match exactly a perk, but I had to pick up anyway.

That's why I would love to see more perks/traits. I even have 2 SOUND SLEEPERS waiting to be put into the game if the trait arrives. lol

Off the top of my head only The Quest still does this - back when I had my 2nd gen iPod Touch there were a number of games with a 'flip screen' button to re-orient. Most apps these days re-orient based on accelerometer input (and some will even switch landscape/horizontal. Coolest of course was Gridrunner, which actually changed to different versions of the game if you rotated to the two horizontal orientations...)
