Yea, but you aren't getting all the features of iOS 4.0, because it wouldn't run smooth with those!

    You meant PS2 right??[/QUOTE]

I believe that the poster is talking about how games for the ps2 dont support the ps3, and vice versa.

The best solution is to make 2 different versions like Rage (for older devices) and Rage HD (for newer devices).

So both games could run well on intended devices without sacrificing framerate on older devices or texture, lighting, effects, etc on newer devices.

As a consumer, any iOS developer who does not charge an extra dime for making an app universal + RD Support + bug fix + new contents + support of legacy devices automatically earns a place among the Gods of iOS Developers(tm), whose altar is always filled iTunes currencies...

However, as a developer, apart from the desire of earning some extra cashie dollars, the hard truth is that "write once, run many" is nothing more than the Holy Grail (ask any Java developer), since a recent report claims that over 90% of iOS device owners have gone to version 4, I feel that support to older devices is an act of love and caring for his/her customers, and it is hard to demand more for that.

    Just my $.02.

It sounds like a good solution on paper, however, in practice is not.

John Carmack (id Software) is well documented on record, holding a view that older gen support actually hurt what they wanted to achieve with Rage.

They had to scale back the newer device implementation, even with the lower gen version.

    http://toucharcade.com/2010/11/19/john-carmack-on-rage/

"Looking to the future, John is looking forward to seeing how many people with older devices are still buying games, since the HD version of RAGE is drastically outselling the SD version. Dropping older device support would greatly benefit their future titles as they could utilize OpenGL ES 2.0 across the board, resulting in even better looking graphics that flat out cannot be accomplished on previous-generation devices. Carmack was peeved that Apple wouldn't provide them with any kind of device specific data, as he wanted to make the call to drop support for the old devices for this RAGE release. He suspects he made a mistake by including legacy device support, because the game could have been "a little bit faster, a little bit better, and a little bit cooler by dropping the older devices."

I want devs to drop support for older devices too if it means holding back from what they actually want to achieve. But I can't be too harsh as well as just several weeks ago I was still using the slow iPhone 3G. And in several months time my iPhone 4 isn't the fastest runner anymore.

In any case, older devices owners don't have to be upset since they can still enjoy plenty of casual games like Cut The Rope, Broken Sword, etc - which are amazing games too. They must, however, accept the fact that their devices are old now and can't always play the newest games.

It's similar with GBA, DS, 3DS.

So I read that this Dead Space is more like a prequel to the second game and it will have 12 stages. But that seems very unlikely as even the console Dead Space had only 12 chapters... So how long is the actual game?

Yes,the game is set between DS 1 and 2.
I didnt hear anything about chapters, but eg. every gameloft game has about 12 chapters, but that doesnt mean that those are very long games...

About how long do you expect one playthrough of the game to take?

Short answer: Around 5 hours for experienced gamers.

    Long answer:
After you've completed it, we have additional content as well. We have easy or normal, so less experienced players can still jump in on easy and experience the whole game. I really want people to see as much of it as they can. I really want everyone to finish it.

So after completing it on easy or normal, you unlock hard mode, which is a very challenging way to experience the game, and really increases those survival horror elements. So you'll be finding ammo is a lot more scarce, you'll really need to be strategic about how you take on the enemies. And we also unlock new game+ mode, so you can replay the campaign, keeping all of your upgrades. It's just a fun way to experience the game again, and kick ass.

We also have a lot of achievements in there as well. There's about 40 achievements, and a lot of them are quite significant, requiring a full playthrough to achieve, like finishing the game with only a plasma cutter, there's a speed run achievement, things like taking out a brute with only a plasma saw.

Why should I play your version of the game on my new gen device? Not everyone wants to play smaller limited games on their new gens.

yea they must stop supporting old devices (3g and older)OR even better the devs must start making two versions of any game one normal(3g and older) and the other one HD(iphone/itouch 4g,Ipad)because for me its a pain to play non retina games on iphone its just annnoy me

excluding the 3rd gen is a little earlier, i mean the 3rd gen is only a year old, and it still runs games better, and they dont have to scale games completely down for the 3g.. But the 2g and bellow are at the end of their lifecycle and games need to stop trying t omake them compatible. i know it makes them more money, but it sometimes takes away from the possibilities of the iphone.

    Yeah my bad.

and to everyone just think 10 years ago we werent complaining when we were playing super mario on a gameboy color... so now we had to complain just because your shiny new toy isn't getting full reconition as a gaming system because your not getting a sh** load of games just for it? just think when a new console comes out do they over 100s of games for it already specially designed for it and only it?

You see the main thing is that new gen models ARE MORE POWERFUL and can handle MORE and devs won't need to waste money for supporting older gens. Because more and more people buy new generation iOS devices. So if it wouldn't have older gen support maybe we would see more capabilities or even larger arias.

You DO know that devs arent exactly LOSING money making games universal, right?not that many people have the latest model.
And if the devs make 2 versions for old and new,the iPad would be on the loss cause it has the largest resolution
