I have to be honest that I wasn't expecting it to be visually impressive, as a fan of both board games and roguelikes I'm used to gameplay pushing the focus on graphics out onto the periphery. Playing this even on my aging device it looks really great. You can slowly rotate the board so that you can see all the cardboard pieces in glorious 3D. It might sound like a small feature but it's makes me hugely nostalgic for HeroQuest sessions with my brother as a young 'un. Anyway, to the more important stuff. It plays largely as you would expect from the genre mash up, which is not something I mean as a negative. You alternate turns between your hero and the enemy, moving across tiles and interacting with the various board pieces. It feels remarkably roguelike until you enter combat. You have a set of three cards permanently on the bottom of the screen that represent the actions you can take. Each card has the expected stats like damage and range plus the occasional special effect. They're pretty varied, I was expecting to start with three similar melee moves but it's much more promising. Assuming it's not randomised; you begin with a quick sword swing for basic damage, an ally-conjuring zombie summon and a paralysing shock spell. You'll also find plenty more cards as you loot chests and other containers. It's nice that they have rarity/quality markers too, involving the the addictive nature of CCGs. Combat is really solid, intuitive but not too simple. You're constantly updating your strategy as you cards improve and you need to watch both your HP and MP. Furthermore, if you overuse certain cards, they'll break meaning you need to constantly rotate them, never over-relying on a powerful find. Enemies utilise cards that are unique to each type; poisoning, blinding, stunning and other annoying effects. There's also a perk system that forces you to pick both a positive and negative trait that makes things a lot more interesting. It's definitely a game I need to sink over a dozen hours into to give better impressions but it feels really rather epic with miniboss encounters and a campaign that suggests a good length. The only sign I can find that it's not a full release build are a few overlapping text boxes, the odd grammar mistake and slightly cumbersome camera controls. I can imagine this being incredibly popular when it releases and I'm certainly enjoying it more than Warhammer Quest so far. Basically, if it looks like something you'd enjoy then I'd say you need to start getting excited for the 1st of October!
