In each game of Barnard's Star, you'll choose 4 fighters to create your team, and then use their attacks and abilities to battle your opponent's fighters and destroy their base. This is a "pure" turn-based strategy game, meaning there's no random chance, and no microtransactions. That doesn't mean it's boring, though -- with almost 4 dozen unique abilities and attacks, and 9 different maps, each game plays out very differently from the last. Barnard's Star takes inspiration from a lot of places: Thematically, it's similar to StarCraft, with 3 balanced yet unique races (humans, robots, and aliens) Mechanically, it's similar to Into the Breach -- you can do things like push an enemy into another enemy to damage both of them, or pull an enemy into a pit for an instant kill There is a chemistry system inspired by Divinity: Original Sin II where different elements interact with each other. For example: Oil is inert by itself, but it can be ignited and turned into damaging fire Water can be electrified, which stuns enemies standing on it If water comes into contact with fire, it turns into a steamy smokescreen that blocks enemy projectiles I should note that this is a multiplayer-focused, 1v1 game. You can play against AI, as well as watch other people's past games in the app. But the main experience is playing games online against friends or strangers. The multiplayer format of the game is similar to Words with Friends, in that you take your turn, and then your opponent will receive a notification that it's their turn. They then have 24 hours to submit a turn, and then you'll get a notification that it's your turn again. I felt this was the best format for a multiplayer game to have a vibrant player base, even if there aren't many players initially. Additionally, it doesn't matter if you're a busy person when it only takes 30 seconds to play your turn! Anyways, please try it out and let us know what you think! We're always open to feedback, and the game is still under active development so please let us know any way to improve. The mechanics are easy to pick up, anyone that’s played any type of x-com style game will immediately be able to hop in. I’ve only played against the AI so far, and I’m really liking it. I have seen the dev post here, so I’ll say congrats on the game, I think it does exactly what you wanted it to. But… I do have a few minor issues. Everyone else reading, don’t take these as a reason not to pick the game up, it’s definitely worth the asking price. 1. Bug notice: Occasionally when playing against the AI, my AI opponent will become treated as a controllable human opponent. Exiting the match and reopening it appears to fix this. 2. I’m usually all for unlockables, but considering this is a pick up and play type game without a campaign, I don’t like having classes locked. It feels like putting out a Chess app and locking the Rook to start 3. The game has an option for up to five team members (I’ve only done four). Is there a technical reason for this limit, or is it a design choice. If it’s by design, I think the maps are large enough to open it up further. The single thing that Phoenix Point does better than X-Com 2 is open up the team size. Also, most of the popular steam mods for these kinds of games open up team size. This game is so fast paced that I think you could do the same without any clutter or diminishment in design. aussiepaul and Alex DeLargest like this. Games are no longer limited to 2 players - 3 and 4 player games are now available! Jump into the mayhem with a friend in Teams Mode, or wreak havoc in a chaotic Free-For-All. Along with the new many-player game mode, 6 new 4-player maps have been added! 6 New Units! Each new faction has had 2 new units added since release, each with their own unique attacks and abilities. New Human characters: - Use the Punk's unpredictable Displacement Charge ability to reposition enemies, and knock unsuspecting ones into pits. Or take one for the team by electrocuting yourself and all enemies in an area around you with Overload. - Architect takes command of dangerous situations by repositioning allies with her Teleport Gun, and crippling enemies' movement with Glue Gun. New Robot characters: - Catalyst manipulates time, taking enemies out of commission for a turn with Stasis and speeding up allies with Inertial Spark. - Omnibus creates openings for tactical brilliance by Placing Teleporters. And it's a fearsome presence all on its own with a powerful Machine Gun. New Critter characters: - Beast uses his body as a weapon, without regard for his own safety. He throws his weight around with Bash, and becomes a threat even after death, spreading acid with Acid Bag. - Lurker infiltrates enemy lines via sneaky Burrows, then decimates any wounded with a vicious Dash Strike. These updates are just the beginning! Barnard's Star has an exciting roadmap planned, including 6-player and 3v3 matches, a full single-player campaign, and more.
