It’s such a great little package and the graphical/musical overhaul (optional, in case you didn’t read the app description properly) is done in the most classy, respectful way to the originals. It’s also the most accessible way to get into R-Type, since...y’know...their original forms can be BRUTAL. elthesensai Member Nov 13, 2012 17 2 3 #4 elthesensai, Nov 7, 2019 Does it have controller support? I’ve only spent a few minutes with it so far, but I have the Dot Emu versions as well so when I have more time I’ll post my thoughts on comparison. This version does not have a control pad option like the Dot Emu ones, though I’m not sure why anyone would use that anyway. macplash Well-Known Member Apr 17, 2014 2,645 1,103 113 Male 3D artist Munich, Germany #8 macplash, Nov 7, 2019 Nostalgia is kicking in hard right now. One of my favorite shmups on ZX Spectrum. Probably THE favorite. But I’m worried I lack determination I had 30 years ago to enjoy it as much as I did back in the days. Still buying it though. Here are the other differences I’ve noticed: Controls: Tested on an iPad, Dimensions relative touch is about 1:1.5 (edit: upon review, I may be closer to 1:1.25) while the older Dotemu games are 1:1 (in other words if you move your finger an inch on the screen, the ship will move about 1.5 (1.25?) inches in Dimensions, 1 inch in the Dotemu games). I prefer the exaggerated movement of this version especially on a side scrolling shooter, though an adjustable setting for touch sensitivity is the way to go, and neither has that. Dimensions has no virtual control pad option but that’s not a good way to play imo anyway. Both have a customizable UI, but Dimensions does not have an option to shrink the buttons like the older games do which is a bit of a shame for iPad players. Graphics: Dimensions obviously has the updated graphics option giving it basically 2 completely different appearances, and there are a few different settings you can apply as well (retro, retro 8bit, etc.). Dotemu’s have scan line and video filter on/off settings. Gameplay: Dimensions has a number of additional options that you can change on the fly. You can speed up or slow down the action at any time, and in infinite mode, you can press a button in the pause menu to give you full powerups, which is nice for people who just want to blast through without the frustration of facing a boss with your pea-shooter because you took a hit at the wrong time. You can also switch between graphic modes at the touch of a button. syntheticvoid, Breinstein, metalcasket and 1 other person like this. There are green borders left and right. They do respond to touch controls as you would expect though which is a shortcoming of the Dotemu games making them nearly unplayable on an X style phone (accidentally dragging your finger off the left side of the play area there will instantly warp you to the right side of the screen likely killing you in the old Dotemu ports). Therefore, to enjoy it properly, I’ve re-installed Super Hydorah! Will be training there until I feel ready for the R-Type (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
