First things first, the sights and sounds of the Mikey series are all present. The awesome speed-running aspect of the first 2 (well, 3) games is still intact and of course...if you dug exploring the levels of the first few games for Mikey's golden shorts, you'll be delighted to know that too is still here. So...what exactly has changed, you ask? The controls. Yes, Mikey's flawless virtual controls aren't present in Boots. Now, of course the elephant in the room is if these new controls are any good...and instead of beating around the bush, I'll just get this out of the way: Yes. Mikey auto-runs in Boots. Don't worry, this isn't an endless runner, and as said, still maintains everything we loved about Shorts and Hooks. Think of it as a cave flyer instead. You press on the left side of the screen to make Mikey float to the left and right to...well, you get it. That's it. No pesky controls on the screen...nothing. It really doesn't take more than 30 seconds to get used to the controls and you'll be glad to know that yet again, BeaverTap has nailed them. They don't get any better than this. Mikey (and his female counterpart, if you choose) has a certain weight to him and once you start getting to the harder levels, you'll truly start to appreciate how well he controls. Oh, and let's just get this out of the way...Flappy Bird, this is not. As mentioned above, this brings us to another comparison between the rest of the series. The difficulty. If you've been following Mikey's little online saga for the last couple of years, you'll remember people questioning if Mikey Shorts was even a game. There were no enemies, you couldn't die and basically the entire game (beside the exploration and collecting coins) was centered around the competitive speed-running aspect of the game. BeaverTap changed things around for Mikey Hooks, but what remained was also a very friendly, easy-to-get-into game that focused on speed-running, but was harder than the first...and you could die. What does Mikey Boots bring to the table? Well, at first glance, it's really easy. Now, undeniably...Boots, more than the other games in the series will attract the casual mobile crowd with it's new controls...but don't be mistaken; while the game starts off easy, the second half of the game and the bonus levels will start tempting you to start pulling out your hair. Mind you, it's not impossible...but when ahem*bonuslevel5*ahem has you dying a couple of thousand times like I did, you'll be put in your place. Rather than just making it to the end in the fastest time possible like you did in the older games, you'll start having to avoid the plethora of grounded enemies, flying missiles, incredibly narrow passages and thousands and thousands of bloody spikes every-frickin-where! It's a fantastic change to the series and proves that BeaverTap Games can not only take feedback/criticism/whining/whatever, but can also whoop your ass with it! So yeah...I think this wall-of-text is big enough. Mikey Boots? Worth getting as a longtime fan or a newcomer to the series? Yes. To both of them. The same gameplay you loved in the older games is still present, yet the game is a totally different monster. Both immediately accessible and perfect for the hardcore gamer. Trust me, you'll love this frickin' game.
