If the devs support this with new songs and tighten the timing up, I imagine this will really help push the iOS Bemani thing. I will be buying this as soon as I get home from work today. EightRooks Well-Known Member Jan 13, 2012 627 0 0 UK #3 EightRooks, Jan 13, 2012 From a quick play through several songs on Easy, the timing seems okay to me - I'd rather have the hits a little loose. A couple of the note strings seem a bit arbitrary, in that I keep thinking they could have picked a more dramatic part of the music to match with, but it's nothing too annoying. As a one-time DDR/Bemani nut who's too out of shape to hit the arrows any more I'm pretty impressed. The visuals are a bit bare - not much going on - and the UI is a tad confusing (I would have liked an explanation in the tutorial on how to turn on note clicks or what pop-up mode means, precisely). But the music is mostly excellent so far (not heard everything yet), the UI is responsive and when you get into the zone, tapping and swiping to the beats is quite the rush. No, 15-odd basic songs isn't that much compared to a DDR machine or even a home release, but when they're this good I'm not going to complain about 69 pence, updates or no updates. I'd buy the soundtrack as MP3s if I could. (Hopefully that's not too enthusiastic for a first post? Been meaning to register since finally picking up an iPod and... well, got to start somewhere, right?) metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #4 metalcasket, Jan 14, 2012 Nitpicks: - The C in cytus needs to be capitalized under the app icon. - An orientation option needs to be added. O_O EightRooks Well-Known Member Jan 13, 2012 627 0 0 UK #6 EightRooks, Jan 14, 2012 Yeah, this really deserves some more love. It's not up to Ouendan levels of goodness, but it's close once you start to get the hang of using two fingers to tap, and the soundtrack is absolutely awesome. These guys have to be huge Bemani fans - the songs just match the particular genres Konami's sound guys turn out too well (the Jpop, the chart trance, the Gallic jazz, the off-kilter folky stuff) - and nearly all of the tunes have a fantastic level of polish. A couple of them sound a bit plastic (lo-fi tinny synths) but it's not remotely a deal breaker. I love rhythm action games, but I'm not very good at them... so I've not moved off Easy just yet, but the patterns on the later songs are still interesting enough at that difficulty they make me want to keep practising (along with the music, obviously). I repeat, the UI could be improved - I don't think it's as intuitive as it ought to be which beats are coming up next, and menus don't feel quite as smooth as they could do. The art is gorgeous, but they're just stills, and the white space on the menus feels more like cost-cutting than aesthetic choices. All the same, these are minor nitpicks - for god's sake, if you're reading this thread and you like rhythm action, it's only a dollar, right? (At least for now.) I'd easily pay the full non-discounted price for this. metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #7 metalcasket, Jan 14, 2012 EightRooks' comments have basically covered every little thing good and bad about Cytus, so apart from my nitpicks earlier, I can shut up. EightRooks Well-Known Member Jan 13, 2012 627 0 0 UK #13 EightRooks, Jan 14, 2012 Not necessarily - I did try and state it's obviously heavily influenced by Bemani games, and that even though very little of it is particularly original the audio has some very high production values (more so, really, than many Bemani soundtracks even today). That's pretty objective. If you actively dislike high energy Jpop, and the way Bemani appropriates more Western styles of music and filters them through Asian pop culture then fair enough, you're probably not going to find much to like here - but it is very well composed, quality stuff, easily the equal of a lot of current name Asian producers, much of which should lodge in your ears pretty quick. People may very well not like it, it's more niche appeal than mainstream, but it's a great, great piece of work, way above Groove Coaster or that Gamevil title whose name escapes me. (I like both of those games very much, but I'm not about to start humming their soundtracks in the shower any time soon.) metalcasket Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze May 24, 2010 11,065 1,342 113 Deepest Circle, Hel #14 metalcasket, Jan 14, 2012 Groove Coaster, while fun, had the most inappropriate music for a rhythm game ever. Also, I love it when music games score in percents rather than stacking combos unless they have 'fever mode' or something. I have a few problems with it though: 1. Timing. The timing for some notes are off by a quite a bit at times, or you can still get a perfect, yet not have the bar line up with the center of the circle. It's a little more clear when you play with the click on. 2. Level designs - As far as I've play, there's a fairly weak integration of slides and holds, with the same general patterns for the taps. The forced symmetry is a little bland, but if that's the developer's choice, so be it. In addition, there's been more than once I've hit a hold in the top middle of the screen and have my hands cover up the next notes at the bottom. It's a minor issues though. 3. Difficulty - Not sure about their highest, but 7 is still really easy (for me) 4. Some crashing on my 4th Gen iTouch I really would like to see the timing of the notes fixed; it's rather bothersome at times. Triplets are really not coming out right on this touchscreen, and when I'm bombarded with notes the flaws in the UI get more frustrating. I'm thinking you're supposed to hit one colour when the slide's going up, and the other when it's on the way down, but sometimes it feels like that works, sometimes like I'm misreading it. Still loving the music, though, and when the patterns click it feels great. I don't like to tempt fate but I would strongly consider laying out for IAPs for this, depending on how good the songs were or how much the devs charged - my main reservation is not over paying for DLC (I am prepared to do that for the right game), it's how... permanent the purchases are?
