Upcoming ‘Arranger’ is a Different Kind of Adventure RPG

I’m always on the lookout for the quirky, offbeat kinds of titles that seem to only be possible in a place like the App Store. When I caught wind of the trailer for the upcoming game Arranger from composer and new developer Arman Bohn, my quirkiness meter shot into the red.

Arranger is an adventure RPG in spirit, but without most of the usual tropes of the genre. Rather than rely on tired classes like mages, rogues, or warriors, you play as a musical arranger embarking on a journey to search out new instruments for your collection.

As it so happens, these instruments are also “instrumental” (yeah, I went there) in helping the good people who inhabit Musica, the game’s world. In this particular adventure, you’re not saving the world with a sword, you’re saving it with a saxophone. I like where this is going.

Arranger is described as one part Legend of Zelda, one part Warioware, and one part old school Sierra adventure game. Combat takes a back seat to 25 different mini-games as you collect a total of 16 instruments across 9 different regions.

It certainly sounds intriguing, and I’m digging the ultra retro-inspired look and general wacky nature in the trailer for Arranger. Not to mention the tunes are awesome. I’ll be curious to see how it all comes together when Arranger launches sometime this summer.

Is it joke for 1st april? Oh...

Dident they talk about this a while ago already?

Sounds great, I loved SMB on the PC. The fact that they don't want to simply port the game because it wouldn't do well with virtual controls, gives me a lot of trust in the smart devs to make a wonderful game.

    Go Team Meat!

Yet another auto runner from left to right, broken up to levels instead of being an endless runner but playing very much like one?
As much as I understand the apprehension from virtual controls, League of Evil actually proved that sadistic, twitch heavy platformers work well enough on iOS.

Didn't they already make a SMB game for iOS?

Yeah, but that was really just a joke. It replicated one of those LCD Tiger games and was really only there to help a little with funding Super Meat Boy.

Is Eli actually serious? Didn't he check what date it is...? Sorry Team Meat, but I can't be fooled on first day of April! :p

And the Darwin Award for April 2012 goes to...

That picture looks like it was drawn on a computer. It's not from a real game. I can tell by the pixels.

It's not much to go by, but the res of the image is 525px × 284px - which would be a totally strange resolution for an iOS game.  I'd guess it's a joke.

I could see them doing an 'endless runner' in a sense but breaking it up into stages.
So an endless runner that actually ends :D

I hope SMB comes to iOS ("eye oss" as some developers refer to it now) - as it's a sure profit and would blowout the first week in sales. There's a lot of incentive to make this game become a reality.

It would be logical for SMB to make its way over to iOS and Android, but taking into consideration that today is April Fool's Day...let's just say I would believe it more tomorrow.

-.- to every body that thinks this is a aprils fools joke beacuse it's posted at april 1.. well team meat posted it on march 31 ^^ http://www.supermeatboy.com/

If it is real, it's a good thing they're building it specifically for iOS rather than porting it. Super Meat Boy with touch controls would be brutal.

It's not wild enough to be a clever 4/1 joke, mainly because it just makes sense that they would move into the huge mobile market.

after all their trolling about the iPhone, it's very probable that they are just joking.
Even supposing it's true, after the sloppy work they did with the Mac port, I'd get it just for free, in order to rate it 1-star.

If this game turns out to be real (the iOS version, I mean) then PLEASE, don't put any IAP's in it, Team Meat! I love you guys, and I wouldn't want to see you nickel-and-diming your fans.
I loved Super Meat Boy on the PC (even though I haven't finished it), and I absolutely adore The Binding of Isaac.
This is why I don't want you to resort to IAP's; you have so much potential! :)
