‘Angry Birds’ Hits Half a Billion Downloads

TouchArcade Rating:

As if there was any doubt left in your mind that Angry Birds has attained such ridiculous levels of success that describing it as “success" barely feels appropriate anymore, try this on for size: The Angry Birds family of games has now been downloaded over half a billion times. Sure, that figure is worldwide and across all versions, even the free ones, but to put things into perspective consider this: That’s about 1.6 Angry Birds downloads for every man, woman, and child in the United States. That’s just… incredible.

Rovio released the following video that has some other crazy statistics on Angry Birds:

If for some strange reason you still haven’t played an Angry Birds game, you should get on that. I prefer Seasons, but really, they’re all great games and available now for basically ever platform imaginable.

Why on earth are you publishing articles this early in the morning? I have never seen TA post something at this ungodly hour.

Hehe. Ungodly for you. Its noontime here in switzerland! Good news are never to early!

I still don't understand why these games are not Universal. They beg to be played on a larger screen.  I'd love to get into them, but I tried one and I was going crazy trying to go through the menus and options on my small iPhone screen.

The visuals are already blown up and blurry on an iPhone as the source assets are all from ancient Japanese keitai games. If Kairo made an iPad version (without redrawing 100% of the assets) it would look exactly the same as the iPhone version does now when running in 2X mode on an iPad.

Except you could see a larger area of the map and it wouldn't be blurred out from the 2x sampling of iPhone version (nor does the iPhone version have to be blurry at all if it is) and there would be more room for the interface. Just saying.

I have to disagree, on the iPhone it's pretty sharp (even on a retina display) but at 2x on the iPad it's blurry as 2x won't use the retina assets.

Right. Thus the reason for an iPad native app which wouldn't have those problems because you can control how the original assets are displayer, either smaller so you can see more of the map at once, or using a nice hard edge to the pixels so it's not blurry. What are you disagreeing with?

This is the first title since Game Dev Story that I'm truly interested in. I, too, would love to see this team start targeting the modern devices more carefully and fully. For example, iPad optimized versions. :)

I wonder why they gave us a niche themed Sim City vs the more modern theme already that would be infinitely more appealing to those outside the US?
