SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘FEZ’, ‘SaGa Frontier Remastered’ and Too Many Other New Releases, Plus Too Many New Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 15th, 2021. I’ve mentioned this before, but these intro paragraphs are one of the last things I write for these articles. Let me tell you something: I am tired. I am very, very tired. I know I said I would go over what was in the Indie World Showcase today, but that was before hundreds of sales dropped and several additional games hopped onto the schedule. So just watch that Indie World presentation on YouTube if you want the gist. Some games were announced. They look cool. Konami isn’t an indie, but it had a game on there anyway. There was both an OlliOlli and an Oxenfree game, and that is a great bit of serendipity. That’s all, on to today’s avalanche!

New Releases

SaGa Frontier Remastered ($24.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Okay, we’ve seen rereleases, remasters, and remakes of classic Square Enix games, but how many of them actually go back and finish a game that shipped with a substantial piece of the puzzle missing? That’s what they’ve done here. Now, whether you want more SaGa Frontier is another question. This game got raked over the coals back in the day for being the unfortunate Square game to come after Final Fantasy 7, but even setting that framework aside this is very much a SaGa game. The new character and scenario that has been added helps round out the story properly, and there are some new features to sand off a few of those SaGa edges if you so desire, but this isn’t a friction-free RPG by any means. I’ll have a review of one version of this game or another soon enough, so do watch out for that.

FEZ ($14.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

You know, I kind of thought FEZ had already come to the Switch ages ago. Well, there you go. The perspective-shifting puzzle-platformer filled to the brim with mysteries to solve is now on our favorite hybrid console. If you haven’t played it before, many would say that it is a good idea to do so. You play as a little fellow named Gomez who thought he lived in a 2D world only discovering the shocking truth behind his reality. After this revelation, he sets out on a journey through time and space. Plenty of reviews out there for this game on other platforms, and there’s no reason why the Switch shouldn’t be able to handle the game properly. So read up if you have to and make your decision, friends.

There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension ($12.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Despite how that screenshot may look, this is a point-and-click style adventure game. It is a game about games, and you have to have the right angle on the medium to solve its many tricky puzzles. It’s quite unique in a lot of ways and actually legitimately funny at times. The idea is that you’re traveling through various game universes and need to play along with the game to get back home. But wait, there is no game. Or is there? A quirky one, to be sure, but it might be just the medicine you’re looking for.

Rain On Your Parade ($14.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

This is some simple, silly fun. And it is fun, to be sure. You play as a cardboard cloud that can make it rain, and that’s just what you need to do. Make mischief as you go through more than fifty levels, unlocking new abilities and mechanics as you go. Make raaaaaay-eeeee-aaaaaaay-n on someone’s wedding day. Drop a bit of thunder and lightning on the citizens of the city. Destroy some crops, it’s okay. Blast the dinosaurs with meteors. The morality of that one is a little questionable, but this is a judgement-free zone for clouds. Sure, it’s not the most taxing of affairs, but I like it. Goofy games like this one deserve love.

The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark ($12.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

The Darkside Detective was an amusing point-and-click style adventure game, and this follow-up should offer a similar experience. Detective Francis McQueen is back on the job again in six cases set in the cursed city of Twin Lakes. With his sidekick Officer Dooley in tow, he’ll investigate many strange cases of paranormal activity. If you missed the original game, I believe it’s on sale right now and it is certainly worth playing. But if you don’t want to play it, this game includes a brief recap to get you where you need to be to enjoy its story. Definitely one to check out for those who enjoy this particular genre flavor.

Relicta ($19.99)

Hey buddy, do you like a good physics puzzler with a solid story? Great, yeah. Okay, how about one with good puzzles but a weak story? Because that’s what’s in this particular bag. Can’t be helped. You play as a physicist trapped in an abandoned Moon base. Your daughter’s life is apparently at stake. But really, you’re just here to do some puzzles involving gravity and magnetism. Definitely some neat ones to solve, and it’s quite satisfying to figure them out. The attempts at getting a story going are less successful. It tries to tick off all the boxes, with environmental storytelling and optional things for observant players to find. But I just couldn’t seem to care about any of it. Look, at least it has the puzzles.

Deiland: Pocket Planet Edition ($16.99)

How chill is too chill when it comes to a game? The answer may well be Deiland. It’s a farming/crafting/resource gathering sim, and that’s a pretty deadly arena to walk into on the Switch. The gimmick of this one is that you’re taking care of your own little planet, which is just so charming that I want to love the game. But I shan’t! It’s just so slow and dull, even by the standards of this relatively relaxed category. It starts off well enough, but after a while it becomes a royal slog. Given the wealth of choices when it comes to this sort of thing on the eShop, it’s hard to recommend this one in particular. It’s a shame because it really is as cute as a button.

Emily Archer and the Curse of Tutankhamun ($9.99)

Ocean Media has a pair of hidden object adventures on offer today. Here’s the first of them, set in the 1920s. Lady Archer gets an invite to Egypt to see the treasure of Tutankhamun. Unfortunately, after she arrives she discovers that the friend who invited her has been killed and the mask of Tutankhamun has been stolen. She needs to recover the precious artifact and solve the case of her friend’s murder, and she’ll do that by finding hidden objects, playing mini-games, and solving puzzles. As one does. This genre has a lot of fans, and you all know who you are. Consider the dinner bell rung.

Myastere -Ruins of Deazniff- ($19.99)

This is a Metroidvania-style game from the makers of Umihara Kawase, and it sure feels like it. You play as a member of a special investigation team named Aaurae who uses her revolver and wire launcher to explore some ruins. You’ll get access to new weapons, ammo, relics, and other items to expand your skills and help you explore the ruins more thoroughly. Naturally, you’ll be using that wire launcher to swing and climb, and if you’ve ever played an Umihara Kawase game it’ll feel very familiar. Depending on how you tackle the areas, the story will change slightly. I wish I could tell you this is the next cool Metroidvania, but my early impressions are that this is a slightly less discordant take on Umihara Kawase Fresh and not much better than that.

Team Troopers ($15.50)

Despite the very simple look of those visuals, this game actually offers up proper online multiplayer action for up to eight players. Seriously, I thought this was going to be a Pix Arts thing at first glance. You can play against bots if you don’t have anyone to play with, and there are a number of different weapons to use. There are three different game modes to play, including Free For All, Team Death Match, and Capture the Flag. There are also four different classes to play. I’m suspicious about how good it is, and I’m especially wondering if it’s worth the relatively high price, but those are questions that will have to be answered on a day when I’m not writing about twenty games and three hundred sales.

Godstrike ($14.99)

This is a 3D boss rush bullet hell game, and that sounds really good on paper. The gimmick here is that you have a set amount of time to do what you need to do, and buying abilities or taking damage will cost you some of it. This is actually a beefed-up rerelease of a game called Profane that came out in February of 2020, and while I initially enjoyed that game I found it wore on me quicker than expected. Unfortunately in spite of the improvements made to this new take on the idea, I’m still finding it to be less enjoyable than simply firing up Furi for another playthrough. It’s alright, I suppose.

Throw It! Animal Park ($4.59)

Ahh, it’s another one of those annoying price tags that makes it hard for me to do my math calculations in my head when games go on sale. Thanks, Tom Create. Apparently the idea here is that you throw animals into bins to make animals appear in the park? And if you keep hitting the same animal, its park version will get bigger? Seems like an odd one, but it does offer a two-player mode via local multiplayer so you can pull a friend into the strangeness. I don’t think I would spend a fiver on this, but you’re the boss of your own wallets, friends.

Hitchhiker – A Mystery Game ($19.99)

This is a game about conversations and solving a mystery by getting to know people. You’ll do that over the course of five rides, with you as the titular hitchhiker. You can look around the vehicle and check a few objects, but the main focus is always on the people who give you those rides. You’ll talk with them, learn their problems, find out what they’re all about, and maybe get a little closer to your goal. You have to make some choices as the dialogue flows that will guide the discussions. It takes a couple of hours to play through the whole thing, and it’s quite the compelling experience thanks to some sharp writing and solid character work. It’s not going to be for everyone, but if you want an intriguing story set in an interesting framework, this might be your thing.

Pocoyo Party ($29.99)

I don’t know who Pocoyo is, but he’s got a party game for you and it is educational. Allegedly. It features six educational mini-games that up to four players can enjoy via local multiplayer. The game is largely aimed at very young children, aged 3 to 5, so don’t expect this to play well for adult gaming parties. It’s not even remotely aimed at me so I don’t really feel all that comfortable discussing its merits or lack thereof. If your kids love Pocoyo, you may want to take a closer look at it. I’ll leave things there, I reckon.

Dragon Audit ($9.99)

Yikes, those are some scary polygons. Dragon Audit is a self-described walking simulator where you meet characters and try to help them with their unusual problems. There is a simple 3D world to explore, and the whole game runs about an hour and a half from start to finish. You play as a.. battle accountant (don’t ask) named George, and need to go rescue a princess from a dragon while collecting unpaid taxes. The dragon, for her part, is tired of fending off knights and kind of would like to be rescued herself, so she sets up a plan to trick George into taking her instead of the princess. This isn’t a great game, but it’s not a bad one either. It certainly has some charm going for it thanks to its romantic comedy leanings. I’d say if you like the description, give it a whirl.

The Seven Chambers ($9.99)

It’s another hidden object adventure game from the folks at Ocean Media. The story behind this one is that a woman falls into a coma and experiences a past life where she’s a highland warrior. She has to make her way to some place called the Seventh Chamber and battle a fallen angel. A wrench is thrown into the works when she falls in love with a lost soul, forcing her to choose between her freedom and her affection. Kind of a high concept setting, but who knows? It may just work for you.

Arcade Archives Frisky Tom ($7.99)

Well, look. This is a game where a randy dude is trying to peep on a lady taking a shower. There’s no two ways about that. She needs water to take her shower, but the pipes are all busted up. So you climb around and replace the pipes while avoiding pests. Get the water running properly and Frisky Tom will get to commit a little crime, as a treat. Neither Nichibutsu’s finest hour, nor its worst. Hamster’s? Eh, who’s to say? The game comes from 1981 so don’t expect too much in the way of titillation when you finally clear the stage. Hamster has done its usual fine work with the emulation, so it’s just like you remember it.

The Longing ($14.99)

Well, this is a curious game. The idea behind it is that you are playing as a lonely Shade who is waiting for its king to wake up from a 400-day slumber. And that is a real 400 days, friends. The game will start counting down from when you begin, and the clock will keep counting down whether you play or not. You’re not getting an ending until 400 actual days have passed, however. You can just leave the Shade and come back in a year and a bit to see the ending, but the poor little fellow will be awfully sad. Or you can pop in sometimes and go exploring the caves for nice things to decorate the Shade’s lair with. Maybe even solve a puzzle or three? Very cool concept. I’m not sure it entirely delivers on its potential, but it doesn’t do a bad job of it either.

ZombieVital DG ($14.30)

This is a management style game where you’re the lord of a dungeon and need to place monsters, traps, and items to repel the adventurers that try to tackle it. Yes, it’s like that one game. And that other game, too. It was originally an Android game, but shockingly it’s not free even over there. Reviews on it seem to be average at best, but if you want to scratch this particular itch there’s little else to choose from on the eShop. It doesn’t have to be that way, EA. You could… you could make things happen. Until such a miracle occurs, feel free to have a look at this game.

Livestream: Escape from Hotel Izanami ($19.99)

This is a side-scrolling action-adventure game where you follow three streamers as they search an abandoned hotel to solve its mystery. Oops, there’s a murderous mascot on the loose and now our hapless heroines are at high risk of being slaughtered! Can they escape? I can’t find any feedback about this one so far, and I haven’t had a chance to play it yet. It’s from Qureate, who usually do visual novels of middling quality. Perhaps that information will be useful in your considerations. Perhaps not.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

This list is already curated. Quite heavily after I got through the first three hundred games, I might add. I tried to get all the games anyone would care about in here, but do check the eShop and your wishlists to see if any other particular indie game went on sale. Lots of good stuff in there, so I’ll leave it to you. Check the outbox on your way out too, there’s some neat stuff in there.
