SwitchArcade Round-Up: New ‘Tetris 99’ Event Announced, ‘Charge Kid’ and Today’s Other New Releases, Plus the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 6th, 2021. It’s a little busier today than yesterday, thankfully. Some weekend events have been announced for Tetris 99 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and we go over the details of both. There are two excellent new releases today, and a very large list of sales that are finishing up tomorrow to consider. New sales? Uh, what are those? Haha, let’s get going!

News

‘Tetris 99’ Features ‘Kirby Fighters 2’ in the 19th Maximus Cup

The 19th Maximus Cup event in Tetris 99 is almost upon us. Starting this Friday and running for three days through the weekend, this even puts last year’s Kirby Fighters 2 in the spotlight with a brand new theme. This event works like most of the previous Maximus Cup events, challenging you with earning 100 points across the event period to permanently add the theme to your collection. You’ll get more points by placing higher, but even if you’re not that great at the game it doesn’t take too long to get the necessary points. Good luck!

‘Calamity’ Comes to ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ in the Next Event

Well hey, it looks like we’ve got a special one to get the year going properly. This weekend’s event for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been announced, and it focuses on Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. Battle against characters and spirits who appear in the game and you can add some all-new Age of Calamity spirits to your collection. The event kicks off on Friday as usual, but will run for five days rather than the usual three.

New Releases

Choices That Matter: And Their Souls Were Eaten ($5.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Another port of one of Tin Man Games’ excellent choice-based adventures. This one is set in a steampunk version of 1830s Europe, and sees you in the role of a person with a unique power. An evil force has conjured up a way to destroy all life, and you need to find a way to stop them before it’s too late. I’ll be doing a review of this one relatively soon, but if you’ve enjoyed this developer’s previous adventures you won’t go wrong picking this one up.

Charge Kid ($2.49)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Hey, this is pretty good. Okay, so first off, this is one of those very challenging platformer deals. Try, die, repeat, you know how it is. The gimmick here is that there are various charging points set around the levels, and if you tag them with your shot you’ll get an extra jump. You have to figure exactly when and where to jump and hit those charging points to get past each obstacle. It works a little like those bits in Celeste where you need to refresh your extra jumps in mid-air. Anyway, it’s a very fun and challenging game at a highly reasonable price. If you like platforming, pick it up.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Mmm, that’s not very impressive, is it? Well, that’s where we’re at with new sales. I expect we’ll be seeing a more acceptable list on Thursday/Friday as usual for non-holiday weeks, at least. The outbox is the bigger news here, of course. The Holiday sales are finishing up in batches, and this is one of the last large ones. Games from Rebellion, Circle Entertainment, Playism, Idea Factory, KEMCO, Atari, and countless indies are finishing up their sales so do be sure to have a careful look through. Many of those publishers don’t do sales terribly often, so it could be months or more before you see them discounted again.

That’s all for today, friends. Tomorrow is Thursday, but it’s also the first non-holiday Thursday of the year. So while there are more releases than we’ve seen on any other single day of the year so far, there are only five or six on the schedule at the moment. We’ll summarize all of them, round up whatever sales come in, and maybe go digging around for some news if things are looking too light. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
