Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 3rd, 2020. Wow, friends. Today I sat down to write the article as usual, starting with the new sales. Before I knew it, literal hours had passed and I had a list of something like 300 new discounts. Because that took so long, that’s the bulk of today’s Round-Up. We do also have summaries of all of today’s new releases, though there were surprisingly few of them. Let’s have a look!
New Releases
In Other Waters ($14.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
This is a stylish adventure game where you explore the waters of an alien ocean. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but it’s certainly an intriguing tale for those willing to stick with it. You play as something of a guide for another character, so you need to scan the seas and find places for them to go and explore. That character will then describe what she’s seeing, a useful thing as you’re basically seeing the world through a simplified interface. Imagination is key here, so if you aren’t big on interpreting things through descriptions, you probably won’t be too happy here. Personally, I found this to be a fascinating experience. If you’re looking for something a bit different, this is a good place to park your boat today.
Random Heroes: Gold Edition ($4.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
This will surely be a familiar face to many TouchArcade readers. The classic run-and-gun title Random Heroes makes its way to the Switch in this special Gold Edition. What makes it so golden? I don’t know! But you get nine chapters each with twelve levels, twenty-eight different wacky and weird heroes, and lots of guns, coins, and secrets to mess around with. While this isn’t my favorite Woblyware game, I know plenty of people enjoyed it. And hey, it’s not like I didn’t have fun with it either, even if I enjoyed League of Evil and Devious Dungeons more. It’s basically the same game as the mobile version, so if you played that one to exhaustion you may want to give this port a pass. Still, for five measly bucks, you’ll have plenty of fun with it.
HyperParasite ($17.99)
Twin-stick shooting action. With so many of these on the Switch, what makes this one different? Well, you play as an evil alien parasite who hates humans and wants bring them to their doom. Since you’re a parasite, you take over the bodies of different characters. With more than 60 in total, there’s plenty of variety on offer. In your parasite form you’re very vulnerable, so it’s important to keep moving from host to host as they get killed off. Pretty neat stuff, even if it isn’t totally revolutionary in a mechanical sense. I’ll be doing a review of this one soon, so if you want more details feel free to hang in there.
Super Space Snake ($4.99)
Uh, how weird is it that we got two games based on Snake this week? This one is a lot more of an orthodox take on the concept than Snakeybus, with its main break from the classic being in its neon sci-fi visuals. Apart from that, this is a very straightforward take on the classic. Move your space-snake around the space-screen, trying to eat space-food that makes your space-snake space-grow. Be careful while space-moving to avoid space-running into your increasingly long space-tail. Even for a relatively low price, this feels like a stretch. Sorry, a space-stretch.
Drift Zone Arcade ($19.99)
A bold move, I’ll give the developers that much. This appears to be a gussied-up version of a PC game that sells for about seven bucks, itself apparently a gussied-up version of a mobile racer that was priced even lower. Look, I’m not saying an indie racing game can’t be worth twenty bucks. The Switch has a few that are worth that much and more. What I will say is that this indie racing game isn’t worth twenty bucks. It feels very rough and limited on the whole. I’m as hungry as the next person for some classic SEGA-style arcade racing, but this sure isn’t it.
Arcade Archives The Tin Star ($7.99)
Hamster’s reaching back deep into the past once again this week with the latest Arcade Archives release. Taito had a lot of conceptually interesting titles in the early 1980s that ran the gamut in terms of quality. The Tin Star, which hit arcades in 1983, isn’t the worst thing that came out of that era of the company, but it hasn’t aged all that well either. You play as a sheriff that has to defeat a gang of bandits. My favorite bit is the bonus stage where you have a horseback duel with one of the bandits. Anyway, Hamster did its usual fine work here, so if you just want to revisit some happy memories this release will do an able job of it.
Sales
Yikes, yikes, yikes. Why did I type out all of these sales? I specifically use the word ‘select’ so that I don’t have to do that, but I went and did it anyway. This huge spring sale has tons of great games in it, and I can’t even begin to point you at all of the best ones. Just go through carefully and see what you can find. Note that many of the listed games also have sales running on their DLC, so if for example you’ve wanted the Power Rangers character packs for a cheaper price, this is your moment. Weep for your wallets.

That’s all that’s good for today and this week, friends. Next week will see plenty of new releases to keep you busy, and we’ll be looking at all of them as usual. Disaster Report 4, Gunbrick: Reloaded, and Galaxy of Pen & Paper are all catching my eye, but we’ll see how things turn out. I hope you all have a good weekend, or at least as good of a weekend as one can have in these times. As always, thanks for reading!
