Wargaming’s ‘World of Warships Blitz’ Available Worldwide

TouchArcade Rating:

After some time in soft launch, World of Warships Blitz (Free), Wargaming’s second biggest game after the very popular World of Tanks Blitz, has finally hit all seven seas of the App Store. So, if you feel like sailing and blowing things up, you can now go ahead and do it for free. In World of Warships Blitz, you get to pick a variety of World War 2 ships from the USA, Japan, Russia, and Britain, and play either random multiplayer battles, Co-op Battles (where you and other players fight against the AI instead of other players), Campaigns inspired by historical naval events, and Ranked Battles. World of Tanks Blitz players can tell that World of Warships Blitz offers more content than its tank brethren.

In terms of gameplay, World of Warships Blitz has you controlling a variety of ships ranging from Battleships and Cruisers to the big old aircraft carriers. You play in a variety of maps and usually have to either capture specific points on the map or take out all the opponents. Some ships carry torpedo tubes, which forces you to go up close and personal, while with others you can bomb ships to oblivion from quite far away. The heaviest ships are easier to control on a touchscreen, given that you don’t have to do a lot of swerving like you have to with torpedo boats. And as far as I can tell, no controller support yet. World of Tanks Blitz does allow that, so it might be just a matter of time.

Since this is a Wargaming game, expect to grind a lot to get your new ships or upgrade existing ones. Every battle gives you experience points and coins, and you can use both of those to research new ship parts (better engines, cannons, etc) or buy a brand new ship. Ships from different countries play quite differently, so don’t rush into unlocking a random ship before checking out their descriptions; that way, you won’t waste your experience points and coins on a ship you won’t enjoy.

Also, try and figure out what kinds of ships you might want to play so that you don’t go down the wrong path. Cruisers act like the medium tanks of World of Tanks Blitz—they are versatile enough to avoid enemy fire and can do enough damage. Destroyers usually do the scouting and get in close in personal so they can use their torpedoes. Battleships are your heavies, with devastating firepower but also the agility of an elephant in molasses. Aircraft carriers play very differently than all other ships since they allow you to launch torpedo planes and bombers that you can then guide by charting their course. Fun gameplay, but not for everyone.

Overall, I’ve been enjoying World of Warships Blitz, and I think it might end up being a better mobile game than World of Tanks Blitz because of how sailing works better on a touchscreen than the much more rapid movement of World of Tanks Blitz. And I’m glad to see the game is already iPhone X ready. Go check it out and tell me what you think in the comments below.
