The app description for Campfire Cooking ($3.99) describes the game as being about the ‘relaxing moments in nature’. However, don’t let this claim and the game’s cozy camp setting confuse you – Campfire Cooking is set to be yet another expansive, dense and highly enjoyable puzzle title from Layton Hawkes, and promises to provide some eclectic brain-teasing action in the developer’s quite literally sizzling style. After how good Puzzlepops! ($1.99) was, it’s no exaggeration to say that Campfire Cooking has been in the very upper echelons of my most anticipated mobile games, and thankfully the title now available to download on the App Store for only $3.99.
While I’d highly recommend watching the above trailer to get an idea of the concept and charm of Campfire Cooking, the game essentially uses its eccentric setting to create some really clever puzzle challenges. Marshmallows on skewers have to be navigated around grid-based environments in an attempt to prepare all the various food items in the camp. While this key mechanic is simple and highly accessible, the introduction of various elements that have a fantastic synergy with the game’s context will make the 100+ puzzles in Campfire Cooking stay varied and interesting throughout. Best of all, in a departure from his previous releases, Layton Hawkes has created a stunning 3D aesthetic for Campfire Cooking that I am absolutely enamoured by, and as cliche as it sounds, the graphics really do bring the game to life. Campfire Cooking is a must-buy for puzzle game fans, but for more opinions and discussion, be sure to pitch your tent on our forum thread and Discord server.
