The Fun ‘Suburbia’ Board Game Just Got a Universal Update

TouchArcade Rating:

Ted Alspach’s city builder Suburbia ($7.99) is one of the best board games on the App Store, and now it’s finally available for the iPhone after a universal update. If you haven’t heard of or played Suburbia, this pretty good port of the award-winning board game has you building your city by placing hexagonal tiles with various buildings next to each other. While that might sound like a simple mechanic, the way you match those tiles has a huge impact on how your population grows and how much money is left in the bank. A few wrong moves, and you’ll be broke before you know it.

The game comes with over 50 different buildings – stores, airports, suburbs, museums – and with various scenarios that keep the game challenging. There’s also asynchronous multiplayer, which should work better now that iPhone players can get their hands on the game, and Essen Spiel expansion tiles to unlock. If you’re into board games and haven’t had a chance to grab Suburbia, you should probably remedy that mistake soon.

Yeah, I beat it with a run of the mill mage deck but I didn't pop the third secret which apparently opens a second (no reward) brawl...? I saw that on Reddit but didn't want to read too much, to avoid spoiling.

      1. houseofg

Ahhh I see now. (SPOILER FOLLOWS!) ................................................................There is a secret level, not a second brawl.

      2. loox

So we need to pop all three secrets?

        1. houseofg

          Right.

Where is the fun when is no free pack?

      1. TheVimFuego

Enjoying the experience rather than expecting a hand-out each week maybe? It's a pretty weak brawl though, I haven't lost yet with a silly Shaman all overload deck to complete a quest.

I'm not gonna lie. 0 packs isn't as fun as 1.

          1. TheVimFuego

Fair enough, I've been playing forever so an extra pack is less relevant to me than someone with a limited collection. I was hoping the "player gains gold on deathrattle" mechanic was actual gold though, that would have been cool even if they limited it to 100 for the whole brawl, i.e. another way of getting 1 pack. Not aimed at you but I get a bit annoyed with the sense of entitlement some people have for what is (sort of) a free to play game run by an entertainment corporation that, unsurprisingly, wants to turn a profit. So all the "blizzard = scrooge" comments just make me laugh.

So you think the decision to award a card back instead of a pack for 1 week our of 52 each year is about boosting profits? I thought it was more about doing something special to celebrate 'Winter Veil' (last year) and Diablo's 20th anniversary (this year). The issue here for me isn't players expectations. It's the decision to give what's widely considered to be a substantially lesser reward at a time of year which traditionally is for many people a time when they give each other more gifts than at other times of year. Granted this year it was a week after Christmas, but it still feels a little too close for comfort. Last year I think it was actually the Christmas week. Either they thought players value card backs as highly as packs, which would be an odd thing to think, or they know players don't value card backs as highly, which makes the decision to replace the brawl reward with this at Christmas an odd one. If it was any other time of year it wouldn't seem so strange at least. Now it's clearly no coincidence that Winter Veil coincides with Christmas so I understand the idea of celebrating. It's just that I would advise giving something more than usual in order to celebrate, rather than something less, so I would advise them to give both a card back and a pack at this time of year (Wa-hey. Steady on lad!). I'm not saying they behave like Scrooge in general: they save that sort of behaviour for Christmas, but as I said, Scrooge changed and they can too, which would be nice.

I hear you, the timing isn't great. I think this brawl was originally timed for earlier but postponed for technical reasons. I was also disappointed when the 'sale' mooted on Google Play didn't happen too. It would be nice for all players to get some kind of discount around the holiday season but it didn't happen. I agree with you that the look isn't good to award a card back (which I couldn't care less about, I rock the default always) rather than a pack.

Sorry about the 2 long answers. I deleted the first and it wasn't showing as such, but then it mysteriously became undeleted. Pc FailFish.

Blizzard are always extra generous around Christmas Kappa

      3. George Tomlinson

This week you get 0 packs and a card back. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Um, maybe we should move the Scrooge brawl 1 week away from Christmas, in case we look too like Scrooge? Yeah. I think so. You know Scrooge changed for the better though. There is hope for you too Blizzard.

          Jesus.

I believe he is still recovering from the recently completed birthday celebrations. It was quite widely hyped, give him a week or so to reply.

Did I go in too deep?
