Nintendo Won’t Release ‘Super Mario Bros.’ on Mobile Because People Would Complain About Having to Pay For It

TouchArcade Rating:

Chris Kohler over at Wired did an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto about Super Mario Run (Free) and all things Nintendo. It’s a great interview, but Miyamoto’s discussion on why classics like the original Super Mario Bros. won’t come to iPhone is interesting. Granted, there’s the obvious reason (virtual directional pads) but there’s a more unexpected rationale:

He’s got one more thing to say about that. “If we did put Super Mario Bros. on the iPhone, (people) would say, ‘Wow, this is well-done, but are you actually going to expect me to pay money for it? Why isn’t this free?’,” he says. “We try to create products that have value that people are willing to pay for.”

I mean, he’s not wrong. Just look at the folks who got the first Mario game on a non-Nintendo platform ever, and they’re complaining. The interview reveals that this is the first Mario game that Miyamoto had a heavy influence on since Super Mario Galaxy, and it could certainly be the last one he ever works on. And people are griping about it. People would complain about having to pay for Super Mario Bros. Enough wouldn’t to buy it, but really, do we need the drama of people complaining about paying for a gaming classic that they can take anywhere? No. Do check out the interview on Wired.

I'll just Mirror to my Apple TV and use a game pad. Easy solution.

      1. Milotorou

        Same

      2. doubleAAron

I don't understand what it's a solution to, but okay. :) (Was some problem just introduced?) I don't tend to like delayed reactions in my controls and stuttering frame rates, myself, so this interests me.

It's a solution to having to buy the Apple TV version. AirPlay/HDMI gameplay ain't perfect (there's always just that little bit of lag) but hey, if it works for ya...

Has a really expensive phone, a TV, an expensive TV dongle and an expensive controller. Complains about $19.99. Logic

$20 for a mobile version of the console game that is barely cheaper is a little steep...

          1. IainsTheName

Ah I didn't know you could get the console or PC version on the  TV.

          2. darkcrayon

Is it the same as the mobile version? The fact it's getting xbox live support made me think it would be equivalent to that version. Correct me if that's wrong (don't know much about minecraft yet).

    3. Mrbestapps

Isn't that more expensive than the pc version tho?

      1. doubleAAron

        No. It's around $7 cheaper.

    4. gaymerX

Don't like the price? Don't buy it. Problem solved.

The post launch support of PE has been incredible. I remember he days when there was no survival mode haha

I wanna know why the Apple TV version is not four player compatible like the console version if I'm buying it at the same price

      1. Sterling Archer

That's what I was wondering. I have it for my 360 but would prefer it to run on a low power device that's always ready for access.

For now if my kids want to do 4 player, they can use the Xbox. Otherwise, I can't justify the $28 Canadian to buy it again (I own the PE, PC and 360 versions) if it can't be multiplayer.

I'm sure that has to do a lot with the Apple TV itself (even the 360 slogs with 4 players sometimes), but it's a bummer regardless.

      Minecraft PE : IOS/Android 6.99$
Minecraft PE: Apple TV 4 19.99$
Minecraft Windows 10 Edition (AKA Minecraft PE): 9.99$
      Minecraft PC Java edition: 26.95$
Man..The Minecraft PE versions Should all be the same price! There all the same game, same features with nothing exclusives between the versions .
If I had a Apple TV I wouldn't buy Minecraft PE on it x.x that's a bit overkill..

Save that 20$ you could save up a little more and get the PC version that supports REAL FULL mods and textures ..
Heck you could afford get it on a both iOS and a Android ..

      1. doubleAAron

I imagine there was a fair amount of development to target the Apple TV and the user base there is way, way smaller. (Though the fundamental engine is the same Apple TV is an odd beast with slicing the app and stringent app size limitations and did they try to support the remote?) The package deal with all the dlc is maybe a way to recoup some costs.

Even so, it's too bad realms and XBox Live accounts aren't ready to go yet and that it's not 4-player. Still impresses me how Microsoft is targeting so many platforms.

Just a thought on the pricing of this ATV version release. This is actually a pretty reasonable asking price considering the included content.

      To compare:

      MCPE = $6.99
      3 Skin Packs = $5.97
      3 Texture Packs = $8.97
      New "Festive" content package =$?
      -----------------------------
Total for MCPE + added content is at least $21.93

Compare with Apple TV complete MCPE 1.0 content + same IAP content as above at $19.99 and the value is there.

If I had the new Apple TV I would buy this up in a heartbeat. Content in MCPE is superior to many console versions already and is only gaining parity with the PC version as I understand it.

      1. dancj

Except I imaging most players couldn't give a toss about skin/texture packs.

        1. dancj

          *imagine (must start proofreading)

    9. clocknova

Can the Apple TV version at least use the same save files as one of the other two versions?

    10. AyRigatony

I recal they said it would be cross buy with the Pocket Edition.

    11. vectorvault

Is there a way to play the Apple TV version with the iPod Pocket edition? My kids would love that. Can't seem to solve it. Anyone know how to connect them? I would really appreciate it.

    12. bobtato

I have no problem paying for this and question the mental health of people who do, but that said, I do feel like a paid game should be able to get past the title screen, and this game doesn't.

I don't know if I'm the only person with the problem, or just the only person who's downloaded it, but it shows one reason why maybe apps should be cheaper on appleTV-- if you need support, you're SOL. You can't even post a review, which would normally be step 1 for a faulty iOS app. Mojang didn't reply to my email, and I don't even know if I sent it to the right place.
