‘Monster Builder’ is the New ‘Pokemon’-like Monster Collecting RPG from DeNA

TouchArcade Rating:

I think it’s safe to say we are not lacking in Pokemon-like games on mobile, and we’ve even got some actual official Pokemon stuff both released and currently in the works. That isn’t stopping DeNA from taking a stab at the genre though with their new monster-collecting-and-battling RPG Monster Builder. To be honest, it actually sounds really cool. A bunch of aliens invade Earth, and to fight back scientists actually take various types of alien DNA from the battlefield and use it to mix and match with other DNA to create all manner of crazy monsters to use as weapons. Here’s the animated intro for Monster Builder.

The whole DNA mixing thing sounds really neat, and DeNA promises there will be thousands of combinations of monsters to create. In addition to that, there are four elemental types and four monster types so you can build up your custom teams of monsters to suit your own tastes and counter your opponents in battle. The press release notes that Monster Builder is currently in testing in various territories, and that it’ll be heading to Android first ahead of the iOS launch, so you may want to check your local App Stores to see if it’s there in soft-launch. Otherwise look forward to the full release of Monster Builder at some point later this month.

Metacritic scores aren't that high on the Steam version and a lot of the positive buzz are fans going nuts.

As a chess game it is wanting and the Regicide version of chess is unbalanced and irritating. Not to mention the RNG is rigged in the CPU's favor. It's another one of those that show a % to hit but if you start tracking the numbers you'll soon realize the 50% for the CPU means more like 80% and 45% for you means closer to 25%

The animations are repetitive. If you're a huge WH40K fan who wants a chess set, it will do but don't expect great things from the AI. If you want a chesslike tactical game in the WH40K universe, be warned that the CPU cheats and isn't even subtle about it at all.

Maybe they've fixed that issue, but I know I was hugely disappointed in this game.

Also, there are microtransactions in the Steam game.

Do you happen to have actual sources for that (more than steam users claiming that it is rigged)? Would appreciate it!

        Hey Crazed Java!
I'm really sorry to hear that you had a bad run with the RNG. Its raised a lot, and we spend a lot of time double/triple checking it. Each time we see it we get nervous that its broken, I can assure you that it is correct. It's simply the nature of a randomly generated number. People feel that if their previous roll was a loss, then the next roll should have a higher probability of being positive. If you have a 50/50 chance in an RNG, is possible to have 1000 consecutive rolls go bad. (Ask anyone that has had a bad game of Risk. TABLE FLIP!)

We have toyed with the idea that as your units get closer, the RNG has a better ratio etc, but we are trying to keep the game as authentic to the tabletop dice roll as we can. If you have suggestions, we'd love to hear them. Maybe a non RNG version for abilities? Abilities that increase RNG? We have brand new faction specific rules that will help if you want to try them and let us know how it feels.

As for the microtransactions, they will ALWAYS be for cosmetics. There will NEVER be any pay-to-win from Hammerfall, as we are gamers ourselves and our multiplayer needs to be fair. All factions can be unlocked with in game points. You CAN purchase a faction if you want to get straight to your favorite clan or chapter. All game updates and changes will always be free, but environments or single player campaigns are paid. (actually they are free for the first 12 days of release! Enjoy!)

If you have any more comments, jump onto our forums and our staff and all keep on top of your feedback.

        As always, thanks for helping.

That is one hell of a response from a developer.

just to let you know guys that premium games these days are getting rare. most of the developers are already give up with the appstore cruel market. some of them are prepared to divert their business model into freemium based. so please, if there is any great premium release on our beloved platform(ios), support the creator by only purchase them directly from the appstore. every support we gave them, even a tiny things can become big if all of us are aware with this situation.

You have selected, 'regicide'. If you know the name of the king or queen being murdered, press 1.

Premium as in "no piles of IAP in order to get more than bare bonesplay"? Because I've been burnt by GW on iOS before.
