Ever since we posted our first impressions of the Nvidia Shield set top box Apple TV competitor, I’ve been keeping a close eye on happenings in the Shield-iverse as they’re (quite honestly) a bit more interesting than the new Apple TV. Nvidia had the remarkable foresight to include a game controller in the box, so to some extent, the Nvidia Shield is way more successfully realizing the hopes and dreams that we had for the Apple TV. Things got a bit more weird today as Super Meat Boy hit the Google Play store for the Nvidia Shield (and presumably other similar Android TV devices).
What’s fascinating to me about this is that Team Meat has sort of become notorious for talking about games they’re going to release on mobile, without too much to show for it. The latest announcements surrounding Super Meat Boy and mobile involve the auto-runner Super Meat Boy Forever which also never materialized. With Super Meat Boy proper existing for Shield devices, it’s a tiny step (which I’m sure enterprising Android users will get cooking today) to sideload a Shield app on to a non-Shield Android mobile device. Hell, I’m a total Android idiot and managed to get all sorts of stuff sideloaded the other direction on to my Shield.
But does this mean Super Meat Boy will be coming to the Apple TV and iOS? It’s hard to say, and really depends on how the game was built. Most development environments now are totally cross platform, it’d be strange, but possible, that this isn’t the case with whatever is powering Super Meat Boy on Android. Personally, I’m more interested in what this means for Mew-Genics which was also curiously delayed, then cancelled, with potential to be “revived," but I guess if nothing else it’s a good sign that the developers are at least… Actually releasing games instead of just constantly talking about releasing games?
