Are there people still reading TouchArcade who remember NimbleBit’s Sky Burger (Free)? If not, it was released back in 2009 and was the pseudo-sequel of sorts to Scoops (Free), a ice cream stacking tilt-controlled game. Scoops is exceedingly basic by today’s standards, but it was a hit when it came out and was among the first few games that put NimbleBit on the trajectory they’re on now. Sky Burger was an evolution of that formula, with slightly more in-depth gameplay that had you building huge burgers instead.
Here’s the original trailer if you truly have no idea what I’m talking about:
NimbleBit has been working on an update to Sky Burger which is going to feature totally new art, a bunch of new ingredients, and even a food truck you can upgrade with the money you earn in-game. They’re also adding more modern free to play elements into the game like being able to watch in-game ads for continues and other stuff we’ve come to expect in iOS games. I’m super curious to see how this update does, as Sky Burger is pretty close to what you could describe as a “retro" iOS game (or maybe “classic" would be a better word).
Will a new coat of graphical paint and other modern gameplay subsystems revitalize interest interest in such an old title? We’ll have to wait to find out.
That's great news, Shaun! Thanks for the heads up!
I won't be reassured until Capcom says something about Monster Hunter.
One battle at a time.
At the very least, if they're spending resources to fix Ghost Trick, it seems somewhat unlikely they won't do the same at some point for a more profitable game. We'll have to wait and see.
Definitely waiting on Monster Hunter.
Yeah me too. It would be a shame if they wont fix this one!
Me to.
Seriously, I just got a controller and started getting into this.
Thanks for being so vigilant, Shaun! :D
Sounds like great news to me. A little bummed I didn't redownload TWAU when I got my new iPhone last week. Suppose it's not a huge deal if it was going to be buggy. :)
That's very good to hear, from both companies - particularly with regard to Ghost Trick, which really deserves success. Besides, I've still barely started in on it, and I'd much sooner not have my full game IAP go to waste. ^_^
What about Monster Hunter? I recently paid $15 for it and it's useless now on my iPad.
Meanwhile, SEGA refuses to fix the games it just like die.
Appreciate the update, particularly in regards to Ghost Trick. I was all ready to start kicking butts and taking names, and by that I mean having a moan and then doing nothing about it. Hey, it's the British way :)
Lol
Great follow-up, but I'm afraid this situation will repeat itself for every new iOS release and will probably only get worse as big publishers notice they can get away with this kind of stuff.
It's a real shame that this is totally falling on the shoulders of the developers to fix. Then again, this is and has been Apple's MO since it's IIGS days. Hopefully, they learned the proper lessons from back in those days and work with developers to keep software working properly.
Thanks for the information! Good stuff
They removed GTA Chinatown Wars from my purchase history.
I discovered a couple other people who had it removed as well.
I thought maybe they removed it for bug fixes TilI noticed it was still for sale lol.
It's possible that you owned the iPad version that was turned universal and then pulled later to make the (previously) iPhone Only (now universal) version the one and only GTA: CTW on iOS.
That does make sense, right? >_>
Excellent reply, GTA CT is amazing!
BTW, ROCKSTAR is AMAZING!
Sounds like the Apple has gotten rotten. The worms crawling out of iOS 9 seem to be multiplying. This sounds like either Cook needs to get cooked or the Apple needs a fresher perspective on the gold mine they are sitting on. Because if they can't appreciate the wealth given to them by Jobs' vision perhaps they don't deserve it.
It is reassuring to hear developers working to address their games. However, Apple continues to trample over the develops, taking their cut, carelessly breaking games and apps with each update, leaving developers in there IOS update wake, with the burden of having to make changes to their games to "fix" them so they work with the "current" IOS.
And why are some games working since several years, unimpressed by the release of iOS 6, 7, 8 and 9? Why do they remain fully functional and never break, without being updated even once? Because those devs stuck to Apple's design rules.
yep. like clash of clans. before it even gets updated to support the new ios it works completely fine, its the developers fault that they dont learn from the first time
The problem here is there is and will ever be only one Steve Jobs. The first time he left Apple it almost collapsed. I know there was a big emphasis on promoting his vision and legacy to live on but once someone else is holding the keys the car will never be driven the same. A sad effing fact but one that only Super Time Force could change..
Never forget MobileMe ... it was made under the lead of Steve Jobs :p
Apps broke between major versions of iOS when Jobs was around, too.
Does anyone know if Shadowrun:Dragonfall gets fixed, too?
There is no bgm since iOS 9, unfortunately. :/
Zombieville also dont have bgm on ios 9
Wish Apple would respond. Seems like we have crises each new iOS iteration.
Unfortunately, Apple would respond "We do have various iOS beta releases, we do WWDC to get in touch with developers and show them how to optimize/update apps code on new iOS releases, we have tech forums, developers web tutorials and various resources..."
In the end, it all comes around the developers having to check all their apps and fix them accordingly to changes made in new iOS releases.
This can be a lot of time/money consuming for small indie developers who are maybe working on new projects to keep their business running and should re-allocate resources to go back to past apps/games to fix them; that's worse if we're talking about apps/games that sell very low because they are quite old.
Big developers/publishers, instead, may just not be interested in updating their games and apps, since they just ported them to mobile platform to get some more cash from one of their IPs.
iOS betas can be of help in preparing an app/game update ahead of time, but they can also be a big hindrance since things sometimes get fixed and broken by subsequent betas without a single change in their code, so most companies just wait for the final release to be out and only then they discuss if it's more profitable to fix them or just remove them from the store and move along.
Obviously we, the users, feel a little tricked when a game just disappears after becoming unplayable by an iOS update.
I know that many agree to the fact that Apple should put some backward compatibility in their iOS releases, but here's my two cents: we're not talking about what should be fair and what not. We're talking about how to prevent all this mess every frikin' time iOS gets an update. We all know (or guess) what a fair practice would be, but since it's been happening EVERY TIME since the AppStore was invented, if I were a developer and wanted to bring my apps/games to the iOS platform, I SHOULD definitely know I have to deal with this, I have to go back to all my published apps and games and potentially fix them with every iOS update. Otherwise I could choose to stop supporting them, well knowing the reaction of my customers, though.
That might not be fair, that may be just plain wrong, but it's how it's been working in the past and how it is working now. Either ALL iOS publishers stop supporting AppStore until Apple finds a way to keep some compatibility with apps written for previous iOS releases (which will never do, 'cause it would mean killing all the enhancements and progress on iOS) or developers just have to deal with app-breaking changes to iOS. It's one of the requirements for publishing software on iOS devices. If you're not willing to "pay" this price, just go back to Steam and/or Android. If you want to jump on the AppStore cash cow, you have to keep supporting your games.
Anyway, I'm sure there's something in the EULAs of those games that gives their publishers the right to pull he plug with no warning, which we agree to the moment we download or buy their games. They may just say "goodbye and thank you for the fish", pull the game from the store and, legally, they would be fine. So I'm just saying if a broken game eventually get fixed, it's great; but if it doesn't, well, thank you for playing, I hope you had a good time :/
Some TA users pointed out that when we moved from SNES to N64, to GameCube, from the Sega Genesys to the Saturn, from PS2 to PS3 we didn't have retro-compatibility. Sure, we're talking about consoles with a 10-year life cycle (more or less) and we can always plug them in and play those games, while we're talking about a 12-month iOS lifetime (major releases, but we also get new hardware every year and it's far more expensive than a home console) and we can't just reinstall iOS 6 on our iPhone 6 or iPad Air 2, but that unfortunately is how mobile gaming works (at least on Apple devices), so we users also have to deal with this.
It unfortunate (though unlikely) if Monster Hunter won't get fixed, but I should either live with it, considering I should have known this potential issue the moment I spent $ 15 to get it on my phone, or just keep playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on my 3DS, which will ALWAYS run the game no matter how many system updates the console gets.
That may sound harsh, but unfortunately this is how it is now :/
Semi-related to 'breaking games', anyone else had issues with iOS9 basically rendering Game Centre unresponsive? I've seen quite a few other people complaining about it; you start Game Centre, and it will just give you a blank white screen and sometimes freeze your phone (eventually self-rebooting or requiring a hard-reset).
It's stopped me being able to play a few games that require Game Centre (like Marvel: Contest of Champions), and is also linked (I think) to another bug that basically stops you being able to delete apps by just making them wiggle and clicking 'X'. The same issue happens; screen doesn't freeze, but entire phone becomes unresponsive, buttons and all.
You can still delete through the settings > storage, but at the moment, this bug is a huge pain in the ass, and allegedly something Apple is working on.
Not sure if everyone has been affected by this yet, but there's apparently a growing amount of users unable to play a few games because of it.
Same thing happened to me. A full factory reset did the trick. Everything works fine now.
I read the same thing, but it's an extreme thing to do considering you can't restore from backup and will pretty much lose everything on the phone. On top of that, it doesn't stop it happening again; it's just a random bug in the iOS. So it might end up happening again a couple hours, days or weeks later. :/
Ridiculous how iOS9 breaks so many games, mine included. Audio no longer works. I've found a work-around hack for it but I'm too afraid to implement and update because the next iOS update may revert and break that workaround.
Gamers I've talked to on Reddit don't seem to care, they put the blame entirely on developers and nothing on Apple. Which is a horrible way to view things. Imagine on Windows PC if MS does a windows update and breaks so many games, who do you think gamers will blame?!
Dont blame developers. I am a newbie IOS developer. I know how tough it is updating an app for IOS devices. Apple doesn't even give developers discounts on their products that they turn around and charge 30% off the top for all purchases includes In-Apps and advertisements.
Why'd they take it out of our purchased list in the first place
I agree. Why remove the purchase history. If it wasn't for sites like this we would never know. I mentioned on a thread yesterday about looking for other games I downloaded months ago wanting to see if it was compatible with IOS 9. I taught I was going crazy. Looked in the App Store not there. Looked in my purchase history not there. Then I even looked on my PC's iTunes library not there. I know I always sync my IOS devices once a week so what gives.
You mean the IPA file is also gone from your PC? I also sync once a week and transfer all my purchases, thinking that was enough if anything got pulled from my history and can reinstall from the PC. So apple are somehow removing stuff from users pcs too? Doesn't sound good. I'm glad I upload my faves to Dropbox now :)
The sound issue makes sense. Since I went to iOS 9 I've noticed if I don't listen to a podcast all at once it sounds like gibberish when I try to resume listening (even if deleted and redone loaded).
Please TOUCHARCADE, ask Capcom about Monster hunter!!!
Would be nice I have had multiple games pulled from my purchase list....sucks!!!
Dev here - one of the big issues that many developers are facing is that every game that is updated is also now REQUIRED to be 64bit compatible, even if the game already runs fine on 64bit devices. It's not just iOS9 (which is actually quite stable), it's likely the conversion to 64bit that is causing delays in updates or games being outright pulled from the store.
If you have a bug in your game, and the game is not 64bit compatible, you're not just fixing that one bug - you're converting the whole game to be 64bit compliant. That's not always an easy task.
We've run into this problem ourselves, and until all games have shifted to 64bit, you'll probably see more games get caught out by this.
Thanks for the update. Your stories have caused me to start looking at my past purchases and I've found 3 so far that have been gone for awhile Star Wars falcon gunner, marvel vs capcom 2 and justice league. Unless the rules change to stop either the developers or Apple from pulling games I don't think I'll buy anymore.
