Apple Shows Off New Gaming-Capable Apple TV, Coming in October for $149

This has been a day of long-rumored products coming to life. Apple has just the new Apple TV with an App Store. Siri integration is in, with a new remote with a toucpad and microphone, along with a new interface for the interface. Oh, and games are definitely a part of the experience, with Apple showing off Asphalt 8 playable with the new remote. Rayman Adventures‘ logo has been prominently featured among the App Store presentations, too.

The new OS is officially called tvOS, as rumored. Apple confirmed that Disney Infinity 3.0, and Guitar Hero Live will be coming to Apple TV as console-quality games. Andy Sum of Hipster Whale showed up on stage, showing off Crossy Road with the swipe-based TV remote. The Apple TV version of the game will feature a new multiplayer mode, too, where you can cooperate with each other or smack each other in the face.

Harmonix is demoing Beat Sports, a rhythmic sports game where you hit balls to the beat, using the gyroscopic feature of the remote to move and swing.

Game controllers weren’t explicitly demoed, but Transistor was displayed with “Game controller optional:"

The App Store will be the same between devices, with universal apps that work on the TV. An A8 chip will power the device, and the device will come with the remote, which uses Bluetooth.

The 32 GB model will cost $149, with the 64 GB costing $199. The new Apple TV will release in late October.

I'm looking forward to getting my grubby lil hands around one of these.

I've already got a MOGA Rebel, but I've heard very good things about the iPad mini Gamevice. If this turns out to be just as good then I could be convinced to get a second MFi controller.

I love the design but hate the price.

I might buy one for Ipad Air.

Instabuy for the iPhone 6 version!

Strange question but would it be possible to hook up a mfi controller and have it work with apps that normally use btstack? Emus for example. Or is it strictly mfi and that's it?

Emus use the MFi framework to begin with; so wired or BT it'll work

Oh they do? Neat. Was worried about the mame one as that hasn't been updated in forever.

Sounds like a great idea for TouchArcade deals! I know it's not likely to happen but this looks great.

Hmmm, maybe it's finally time for me to buy a controller for my iPhone6.

I have to say the gamevice is by far the best MFi controller I've tried, I'd recommend it to anyone!

Sounds like you own one. How's the dead zone on the sticks? Seems a large majority of these mobile controllers have huge dead zones. And how's the dpad? Mushy? Clicky?

      1. Aaron C

Yeah I do, had it for a couple of weeks now. I've not really noticed the deadzones in play to be honest, which is definitely a good thing, it feels a lot like my xbox controller. The dpad is on the clickier side definitely, again the best comparison I could come up with is an Xbox controller.

The main thing that comes across is that this is a 'real' controller, and just melts away leaving you to enjoy the game. With the other controllers I've tried, whilst some are quite good, you still feel a bit like it's a gimmic rather than a serious piece of kit. Everything has been so well designed as well, no shonky attachments or dodgy triggers, and there are lots of nice touches like an extra long charging cable (which also charges your ipad while it's plugged in), a headphone jack and so on.

If you don't notice a deadzone issue that's good, just means there isn't really one. I hope you mean clicky dpad like xbox one because the 360 dpad is really bad and mushy.

How are the face buttons? Are they really loud? Like on the moga power for android, the face buttons are abnormally loud when you press them.

Glad you like it overall. When this was originally announced, it was the controller I was looking forward to. The buttons do seem really spaced far away to the sides though. On the ipad air, I imagine we'll be expecting the controls to be parallel to your shoulders or something.

          1. Aaron C

It's definitely clicky not mushy, and the face buttons aren't loud at all!

When I first got it I was a bit worried about the buttons being far appart... but honestly I've found it to be really comfortable.
