The Superb ‘Warhammer 40K: Deathwatch’ Goes On Sale For The First Time

TouchArcade Rating:

It’s barely been out a month, but the outstanding strategy game Warhammer 40K: Deathwatch – Tyranid Invasion ($1.99) is already on sale. Regularly selling for $4.99, you can now pick up the game for a measly $2.99, and let me tell you, that’s a lot of value for your three bucks. I’m not sure exactly why it’s going on sale so soon, but it seems pretty likely that it’s being held to beef up the player base in anticipation of the soon-to-come update that adds four-player multiplayer support.

Even if you’re just in it for the single-player mode, you’ll get more than your money’s worth out of Deathwatch. I found the game to be extremely satisfying, even if it doesn’t have a whole lot of new tricks up its sleeves as far as the strategy genre goes. The key is in its excellent scenario designs, which offer a good challenge to players of a variety of skill levels. The gorgeous graphics certainly don’t hurt matters, either. It’s got a few bugs here and there, but the overall quality of the game is such that it’s worth gritting your teeth and suffering them until they’re patched up. You can check out my detailed impressions in my review of the game, if you’re interested in more words.

I’m not sure how long the sale will be running for, so if you’re interested, you should grab it as soon as you can. Once that multiplayer update hits, I expect this already excellent game to be even better, and if you can get it while keeping a couple of dollars in your wallet, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Note: We’ve been having issues recently with the links on our site not displaying the current pricing infor. This post lists the game at $4.99 still, but we pinky swear that in the App Store it is $2.99.

Thanks for the heads-up, that's great news!

The app says the free FF I is available through 8/31/15.

      1. Shaun James Musgrave

Thanks! I'll add that to the story.

Is the free FF1 a good starting point for someone who has (embarrassingly) never played a FF game before?

      1. timmfox

I'm a RPG newbie. I played FF 1 first. It's great, but I think FF IV teaches you to play much better. I think FF IV is the best place to start. Once complete, then go back and start at 1.

Other than VII, IX, and X, my first intro to FF on mobiles was FFIII, and I still love it. Great controls, light story, and endless character options. I'd recommend III and IV for 3D and V or VI for 2D. If you start with I you may not be as captivated.

6 has a tutorial, it's optional. Like Chrono Trigger and FF7, you can go to an optional house to learn the basics.

oh man, you're right. It's been so long that I forgot.

      Thks for the tip!

This is great news! Earlier this year the FF14 producer said that there would be some integration between the Portal App's Triple Triad and Triple Triad in FF14. Here's hoping that comes sooner rather than later.

Cool app. I wish it didn't look like those clunky games like Final Fantasy Airborne Brigade and Star Wars Force Collection. It just looks messy and hard to organize in my mind. Anyway, I also would like to delete the data FF1 is taking up, now that I've downloaded it. Hopefully, it will still register that I "own" it if I delete the app and it's data, and redownload the app just to play TT. I'll do some experimenting!

Is any one else offended that they are prominently advertising Final Fantasy All The Bravest in the Portal app? It's like they're trying to scam money off people for the second time. I'm concerned this will result in the taking advantage of gamers that don't know of its reputation as an abysmal Final Fantasy game.

So cruel! Description says ".../iPod Touch (4th Gen or later)" and "iOS 7.0 recommended", but those don't coexist! C'mon, September, I'm ready for an iPhone...

    9. prince_david

What happens if I already own final fantasy games

    10. bubby525

Triple triad is having the same issues as the Japanese version where after a certain amount of time it won't even start. Glad to see they fix their apps before release.

    11. Devok

Are they going to remove the blue bars on the next update, it's a very bad bug.

    12. Robert Hendrie

Weird, FF1 isn't on the Canadian iOS App store.

      1. Shaun James Musgrave

Yeah... looks like they did the same thing they did in Japan. FF1 has been pulled, and is now only available through the Portal App. Well, at least we got one last update that the Japanese didn't.

        1. Robert Hendrie

I wonder if they will start pulling the others and only sell them inside the app.

          1. Shaun James Musgrave

So far, Final Fantasy 1 is the only one that got that treatment in Japan, and it's been about a year. That said, I fully expect Final Fantasy 2 to get collapsed in at some point provided this goes over well enough.

    13. Dueler

Just a tip, the front page each day, most news articles and help guides will have a "Get Points" button at the bottom. Be sure to hit it to get points to spend in the portal shop. You can buy wallpapers for your phone from various Final Fantasy games and cards for Triple Triad so it's a decent way to catch up on Final Fantasy news while being rewarded for it.
Also just playing triple triad each day nets you some points so thats nice.

Honestly just glad it's out in English, been using the Japanese portal and Google translate to play Triple Triad for a while now.

    14. tpianca

I'm glad the music of Triple Tryad is still the same! I had this music in my mind for ages...!

    15. borism

I'm playing since it is out and I love it but... Game Center never finds me someone to play with online... someone actually did?
