Say what you will about kids these days, but apparently when it comes to games, you can entertain them with simple names and themes. The 80’s had Avoid the Noid, a Domino’s Pizza tie-in game and commercial campaign. Noodlecake’s Avoid isn’t trying to sell you pizza at all! It has you moving a ragdoll dude around, avoiding buzzsaws to try and lose as few limbs as possible, because when you run out of those, you can’t avoid anything. The Noid is going to straight-up freeze your pizza and you can’t do anything about it, because you’re dead.
What is wrong with kids these days? Avoid is just a game about getting high scores, it’s not about saying that a fantasy creature is crushing your pizza, because our brand of delivery pizza brings you structurally-intact pizza in a minimal amount of time! Avoid isn’t selling any one pizza brand in particular! In fact, it might not advertise for pizza at all! The 80’s didn’t need full-color graphics, just the limited color palette of CGA visuals. Noodlecake and developer HypnoCat are using full color graphics. Ugh, what is wrong with the world today?!
If you can put up with Avoid not shilling for any one pizza brand in particular, and just being a fun-looking high-score chaser with a bunch of different ragdoll characters you can play as, then you can check it out next Thursday, August 13th. It’s part of Noodlecake Arcade, a bunch of high-score chasers that the studio is working on developing and publishing in the coming months. But will any of them sell you pizza? I hope they do a better job at that with their future games. For shame, Avoid. How will we know to avoid the Noid now?!
