‘Mortal Kombat X’ Updated with Raiden Challenge Mode, Kung Lao Characters, and Bug Fixes

TouchArcade Rating:

During the first week of April, Mortal Kombat X (Free) made its official mobile debut just ahead of its console and PC sibling’s launch the following week. As expected, Mortal Kombat X on mobile was quite similar to Injustice (Free) or WWE Immortals (Free) in that it was a stripped-down fighting game with a heavy emphasis on collecting and upgrading your characters. Overall, it was actually pretty good, but holy cow was it ever buggy.

A week after release Mortal Kombat X got some new content in the form of new starter packs and an extra leg of the campaign. It was nice, but plenty of bugs still persisted, which was frustrating. Now, about a month and a half after that first update, Mortal Kombat X has received its second update which adds the major new feature of a Challenge Mode which, for this go around anyway, will give you a chance to win a Raiden character. It also adds in two Kung Lao cards to the roster of playable characters. Finally, yes, the update claims that it fixes some bugs. That last part I’ll have to spend some more time investigating to see how true it is, but at the very least it’s nice that the developers are attempting to take care of the game’s many issues, even if it’s slower than I’d like.

Mortal Kombat X launched with a ton of momentum, and I wonder if the myriad of bugs and exploits have ruined its potential. Only time will tell, but if you’ve been annoyed by the bugs while playing Mortal Kombat X and have been looking forward to that Raiden challenge that’s been teased on the menu screen ever since the game launched, make sure to grab this new update and let us know in the comments how it’s working out for you.

Lol they good harder than their yugioh designers, in both card balance and bundles. How many useless cards are in most structures, sets and tins? At least premium gold pays for itself

      1. MrVariant

*goof. And don't get me started on power creep. Also funny to see castlevania make a few million on kickstarter when they claim it would not sell

        1. Bliquid

          Hilarious, actually.
I hope that turns out well like it deserves.
As for the article, seems to me like he just elaborated what was the original message, especially with the goofy "what's mobile or console, anyway?" statement.
          Konami has done nothing right,lately.
No groundbreaking games, no love for the fans and that embarassing P.T. Gate.
Can i dream for Kojima to go work with Rockstar and rule the world?

"Mobile is where the future of gaming lies"- If you use the other definition of "lies", it now sounds like a wise proverb. At least that's how I prefer to read it.

      1. Nekizalb

I agree -- it does make a lot more sense that way. The sad truth is that, at the end of the day, most large game companies see mobile as an opportunity to make a boatload of cash (through egregious IAP) rather than a new medium through which to express emotions and convey an interactive message (Monument Valley comes to mind).

        1. negitoro

I'd argue that the vast majority of media is there to make a boatload of cash first.

Most music, film, TV, books are there for mass market profit rather than do anything meaningful to push the medium.

By itself, this isn't really a big deal, in my opinion. As long as people like us are around, there's will be a market for the deep meaningful stuff and there's still games like Candy Crush for the mass market gamer.

      2. Xexist

        Brilliant!

    3. Anonomation

They say this after they cancel a highly anticipated game that looked revolutionary because they don't like a person.

    4. L0ck

These guys still own the music game section of game centers in Japan for starters; they're not going full-mobile anytime soon.

      1. Shaun Musgrave

That would be of greater comfort to them if game centers weren't finally dying in Japan, I think. Even the ones staying open are giving more and more space to UFO catchers and other prize machines over games. Konami's music games in particular are well past their heyday. I've seen Taito's Groove Coaster cabs here and there and Namco's Taiko no Tatsujin remains a mainstay, but even when you see Konami music cabs these days, they're ancient.

I'm sorry but they apologized? I don't think mobile gaming will be the future I still think there will be consoles and pcs but they don't need to apologize for a statement that they believe in. They shouldn't feel pressured to apologized to console and pc users I'm not offended by the statement hell I don't even care I have all 3 platforms and I prefer console over all of them but that's a personal opinion and I'm not gonna apologize for that and neither should they. Seems silly. Whatever.

      1. Agkelos

I get the feeling the apology is more geared towards their stock holders. I can't imagine such a bold statement being good for their stocks.

        1. Tallgeese

Well stockholders achieve nothing if gamers aren't happy with the company and will not buy from them, so in a roundabout way it's for stockholders by-way-of hoping to appease those customers that feel alienated. At the same time always having a "future game plan" (for example saying mobile is the future) is for the shareholders because it's meant to demonstrate the company is "moving forward" and profits will be hopefully be increasing.

    6. Bones00

If Silent Hills goes to Microsoft as rumored, I'm done with Konami.

      1. mschmeh

P.t. Is not going to Xbox. r.t. It's the same concept it's just a remake using project spark. Look it up its kinda cool just sucks for us using ps4

        1. Bones00

Well at least I still have P.T.

        2. RampageDeluxe

          That's come out as false.

    7. vic_viper_001

Pssh, whatever... just call me when there's a new Gradius.

      1. rotsentu

        LOL!

    8. zergslayer69

I only want to know what happened with Kojima. Quit saying a lot of nothing. (Directed at konami not the author of article)

    9. eventide

Great. But you still lost Kojima, are clueless about Castlevania, and are rumored to lose Silent Hills to Microsoft. So you still succeed at sucking at knowing what your fans want.

    10. AdamBoy64

I think it's more a bit of damage control to try and keep that group of gamers onside - I doubt they've changed their mindset or company focus.

    11. Modjular

TA has their analogy game on POINT. I've never heard "MJ moonwalking backwards on fast-forward" before today.

    12. mdcdeve

Relevant to the changing gaming industry hm.. Basically means the faceless execs who hold the purse strings said, hey there seems to be a lot of easy money in mobile games, so we want that money ok.

      1. Tallgeese

        ^that

      2. AdamBoy64

Guess that makes sense. Otherwise shareholders will be wondering why their competitors are making more money; and wondering why they should keep investing in a company that isn't.

    13. Zooey Sheen

it is the most convenient way for ppl to play games, however the best experience still lies in the console.

      1. Bancheis

Well, no. The best experience still lies in PC's that are built for gaming. The watered down and best price experience lies with consoles.

    14. negitoro

I'm disappointed that people reacted so poorly to this that Konami felt like they had to apologize rather than prove them wrong by improving the quality of any mobile offerings.

    15. prince_david

Does Konami even have any good mobile games?

      1. Bancheis

On behalf of Konami and other companies out there that make mobile games, I shall provide the answer.

"You can play them all for hours and hours to eventually find out, or charge 5 dollars to your account to find out instantly."

    16. boydstr

I don't understand that they make such a statement which way your choose your words there is always a large group of gamers who feel ignored, you can also made a statement "we are going to focus more on mobile games but still releasing games on console/PC"hire a media advisor.
